Three job-related calls lined up for the next 2 days.

One, a preliminary call with a recruiter; probably nothing will come of it because it's an on-site position and my car needs ~$3k worth of repairs before it will work. (Yay, economic traps!)

Another, in the process of scheduling, also a preliminary call with a recruiter, but fully remote and it sounds promising.

And a third, tomorrow, with a major, familiar brand name in e-commerce which is actually the first step in the interviewing process. I was able to get a recommendation there so skipped to the head of the long line.

Wish me luck!

so maybe i do know who needs to hear this, but if you're convening an event focused on AI guardrails, data or sovereignty, open source, rights to personal data, etc., maybe vet your platforms?

attendees should not have to consent to a third party platform to infer , train their AI with participation content, or use NIL for their adverts.

srsly - crowdcast, whatsapp, discord, telegram are not private channels, and they do harvest data. walk your talk, folks.

ends rant....

Even more reason not to consider going to the :

bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c1dz0g

"As well as the collection of social media information, the new document proposes the gathering of an applicant's telephone numbers and email addresses used over the last five and 10 years respectively, and more information about their family members." ......

If you refuse to give them your social media passwords, what are they going to do, deport you ?
Personally, I think if you "have" to go to the US, leave your personal mobile at home and just take a burner phone (feature phone), and make sure your embassy's number is in the contacts, incase you are picked up by the nazis.

I've finally have a working "Java-GI application template" with working localization, settings, desktop file, manifest, icons, etc, that can be distributed as a Flatpak. It's available here:

github.com/jwharm/java-gi-app-

The application uses Gradle to build the source code, and Meson to install settings, resources, translations etc. Currently, both build systems are triggered separately from the Flatpak manifest. I will try to improve this, so that meson triggers the gradle build (or vice versa).

The screenshot shows the dutch (nl) translation that demonstrates the gettext integration.

A screenshot of the template application. In the background, a terminal displays output of flatpak-builder.

Today, the RSL Collective releases the RSL 1.0 standard. CC worked with the RSL Collective ahead of this release to integrate components of the CC signals framework into the new standard. On the surface, CC and pay-to-crawl systems are strange bedfellows. We have always been a champion of the open web and are concerned about knowledge becoming harder to access. But we also recognize that thoughtfully designed pay-to-crawl systems may help curb extractive behavior. ๐Ÿงต

I love fresh tortillas but I always have bad luck with the tortilla press. They stick, they tear, they end up dry, the whole thing feels like a production. So, I almost never make them. Today, I thought: what if I just skip all that and make them by hand? Long story short, they turned out great! They aren't tortillas in the traditional sense but they're sturdy enough to stand up to salsa and soft enough to fold around a pile of beans. Yay!

A cooked disk of blue corn masa sits on a white plate.Another blue corn tortilla, this time topped with beans and salsa.

Help us build an awesome event this upcoming May!

Submit to our CFP, help us get our villages, workshop day and talk tracks over 2 days to be awesome!

Maybe a cloudsec village or cloud track?

We're seriously trying to build a village or track.

How about AI security?

An offensive village?

We already got some promising submissions - 2 villages proposed and under evaluation (Car hacking, CTI).

i have to recuse myself officially because it's exactly at the nostalgia point, but i do think there's some kind of inflection point at/just after the nintendo ds where games (at least on nintendo consoles) started feeling like modern games. i think the "feels like modern games" to me means "you can't see the edges of the system through the game". for example, all NES and GB games can be easily clocked as having sprites moving around on a scrolled grid of tiles. you can still see some of that in DS games, but after that it became hard to identify "oh, this is clearly using technology A of the console"
