Disclaimer: I find it a little tacky to talk about metrics on the Fediverse. That is NOT why I am here.

BUT! It's worth saying out loud that I found a real community here that I am immensely grateful for.

The lack of algorithms - a mysterious black box determining which posts get seen - is a big bonus to me...

I spend hours writing articles... that people now REALLY read (unlike on Big Tech platforms, where my blog posts would be seen by 3-4 people because... god forbid you include a link to an external site. And that includes Bluesky, too).

Thank you for making me feel seen and heard and valued here ❤️​

Ghost v.6 has new metrics built in... I was shocked to see the number of visitors to my first post about YunoHost: 955!

So even if I find it tacky to discuss numbers, this is not to brag. My main intention is to dispel any myths about Big Tech platforms... writers and creatives often say that they HAVE to be on X or Instagram or TikTok because that's where their audience is. Well, all Big Tech platforms have finicky, mysterious algorithms. I was on Twitter for 14+ years and none of my links ever got 955 visitors in 12 hours. So I wanted to put this out here to say:

ANOTHER WAY IS POSSIBLE.

And it's even better than the old way.

Real community. Real engagement. Without surveillance capitalism.

What's not to love about this?

Ha! Man, that's wild. Because for some reason Linux decided to build its own (worse) subsystem 5 years after FreeBSD’s kqueue (release in the year of our Lord 2000!).

And to this day, lots of software that supports Linux but not officially FreeBSD (looking at you JetBrains and Sublime) only “work”with shims.

FreeBSD 15 fixes this with a native implementation 😂

Italy awarded more than 1.1 gigawatts of capacity to 88 projects in its first auction exclusively for solar projects built without equipment manufactured in #China, setting an average price of 66.38 euros per megawatt hour.

The tariff is 17% higher than the average price for a renewable auction earlier this year that had no restrictions on equipment origin, according to data from Italy’s electricity services agency (GSE).

Also, this is also a great case study for all the “#CBAM will kill EU industry” horror stories…

Předpokladem jakékoliv změny ve světě je schopnost představit si svět jinak. V současné době mě přijde jako zásadní umět si představit svět po éře AI bubliny.

Bude to naprosté ? Nebo to bude to nějaká forma relativně příjemné dekadence, kdy budeme chodit rabovat nevyužívané grafické karty do ruin opuštěných datacenter, odstřižených od zdrojů energie a vody rozzuřeným obyvatelstvem, a používat je pro letní trénování svých menších modelů pomocí přebytků solární energie?

Svět se nepochybně znovu změní. V 19.století si málokdo uměl správně představit změnu, která nastane po konci parních lokomotiv a zaoceánských parníků... některé převažující vize - namátkou třeba vzducholodě - se ukázaly být slepou uličku. Jiné bublin ovládly na několik desetiletí svět, jako třeba všechny možné formy nosičů médií, aby postupně vyšuměla do ztracena a do muzeí. Gramofon vládl světu několik dekád, vzducholodě mu nevládly nikdy.

Začínáme si pomalu dokázat představit svět bez osobních aut - nebo alespoň s méně osobními auty. Roste počet lidí, kteří takový svět pokládají za žádoucí. V současnosti si ale většina z nás asi nedokáže představit svět bez nějakým způsobem prohledávatelného Internetu.

Dokážeme si představit svět po AI bublině? Potrvá tahle bublina tak dlouho, jako trvala třeba éra železnic, a nebo spíše krátce? A hlavně: co přijde po ní? Neměnný ideální svět bez rizik a konfliktů určitě ne. Pokud má něco šanci bubliny přežít, tak je to nějaká nová forma racionality, která bude poučená tím, že ne vše, co se jako rozumné či dokonce pravdivé jeví, takové doopravdy je. Éra po konci AI bude snad poučená tím, že ne každý symbol je vhodné kombinovat s každým.

Existuje naděje, spočívající v tom, že některé bubliny minulosti odezněly bez nějaké zásadní katastrofy, která by otřásla světem: prostě jen vyšuměly, odezněly.
