Today's lunch-time nerdsnipe:

In 1852, Jean-Baptiste Boussingault discovered by experimentation that bread does not go stale because of a net loss of moisture (by means of hermetic sealing), and further observed that bread could be un-staled by putting it in the oven at a modest temperature.

He published his work in the paper "Expériences ayant pour but de déterminer la cause de la transformation du pain tendre en pain rassis" and despite the fact that I DON'T READ FRENCH I have made an attempt to track down a digital copy.

Alas, it appears that this particular article has never been digitized.

because my reply might not be widely circulated, I'm just gonna repeat this here:

the idea that transfems who don't "pass" aren't trying hard enough is a line right out of the truscum playbook. it's victim-blaming. and it saddens me to see that a widely circulated post burying this sentiment under a legitimate criticism of doomerism seems to be flying under people's radar.

🤘 New episode of Changelog News!

This episodes diverges from our traditional fare. I’ve reviewed the 49 previous editions and picked (IMHO) the coolest code, best prose & my favorite podcast episode from each month!

😕Ugh. I knew that I had over-browned the caramel for my apple Tart Tartan 🥧, but I tried to play it off and just keep going. Now my tart looks good, but it tastes wrong.

I did this to myself.

And yes, I said Tart Tartan, not Tart Tatin! I am too old to start correcting words now. It's locked in.👴🏿

I don't know how I feel about the idea of an AI physicist. (or even an assistant for this.) At least they're a non-profit?

firstprinciples.org/

They want to unify physics in 10 years. *skepticism intensifies*

Anyway, if any physics nerds needs a job, I know the guy. They got funding for this. He's pretty chill.

In today's episode of I Told You So:

May 2025 ⚠️
"Daily occurrences of data breach incidents have taught us we cannot trust these services to safeguard our data. Data breaches for this sensitive information are only a matter of time.

The concentration of such valuable data will likely be monetized and resold either by the platforms themselves, by the for-profit third-party "age assurance" providers they use, or eventually by the criminals who stole it from them."

October 2025 :dumpster_fire:
"A hack impacting Discord’s age verification process shows in stark terms the risk of tech companies collecting users’ ID documents. Now the hackers are posting peoples’ IDs and other sensitive information online."

I'm currently looking for one or more volunteers to maintain the Openmoko USB PID + OUI service at github.com/openmoko/openmoko-u as the existing maintainer is no longer available. This is a service providing free USB Product IDs and Ethernet MAC addresses for the and community. Volunteers have to review of the PRs fulfill FOSS/OSHW licensing requirements before merging PRs.
