Like many other autistic and/or disabled people I will spend Christmas on my own and while I appreciate my alone time and the atmosphere and the silence of it, I know it can be difficult and hurtful.

So I would like to connect with other people who spend Christmas on their own or experience feelings of loneliness during these days, by interacting with this post.

That can be just leaving and receiving a virtual hug or telling each other about the gifts you received or gave yourself during the year, maybe share a piece of music, write about your favourite video game or any other special interest. You can do this in private mode (English or German), I know that interacting with groups can be difficult, impossible sometimes, but every now and then I write posts like this during a moment of bravery and I already found amazing online friends by doing so.

Let's support each other in a world that makes building connection so difficult and feelings of loneliness so common.

Boosts are very much appreciated. Thank you.

@KaCiKaCi :AuPan: I’m on my own too.
I’ve made my place cozy and decorated a bit this year for it without spending much money. A tree of books. Just a few little touches here and there to make it special for me. It has helped somewhat. It’s nice to look at. It gives me a smile. I wasn’t going to spend another Christmas alone without making it nice for me. I still get to have a Christmas.

A Christmas book tree made of red & green bound books, some with gilt lettering, festooned with disco balls, fairy lights, ribbons, garland, and netsuke.
At the top is a tiny poseable male drawing model wearing a fuzzy red scarf and holding a small disco ball.

Just as we need to work to dismantle the racism and sexism that we've learned, we need to work to dismantle our inner systems of capitalism and puritanism. This is why you'll hear people (especially Black leaders) name rest as resistance.

This thread is inspired by a mom in a parenting group posting about how exhausted she is because her daughter is sick, so she's barely slept while taking care of her... and she's overwhelmed about hosting a holiday dinner tomorrow.

Please do not host a holiday dinner while you have been run ragged taking care of a sick family member.

You should be resting, because your body is trying to fight off that illness. You're basically giving the virus the win.

You should not be inviting people into your virus-ridden home.

And during a pandemic, eating indoors with others – an activity that requires unmasking – is a supremely bad idea.

And yet if we can make ourselves do it... we most likely will make ourselves do it. Resting feels like cheating. It feels bad.

Puritanism is the layer under everything else in American culture. We rarely notice or talk about it. But it's tied to white supremacy, perfectionism, workaholism, and a whole smorgasbord of judginess.

Capitalism, well, we know its flaws. But we've internalized it to an extent that most of us don't even realize. Our sense of worth is intimately tied to achievement.

The intersection of puritanism & creates an incredibly insidious, toxic form of .

Push through the pain. Work through your illness. Keep going through your burnout.

Puritanism tells you that this is virtuous, and makes you a good person. Capitalism requires overwork for your survival.

Pair this with a pandemic, and you've got a nasty escalation of eugenics.

Dare to be forgotten.

We have all been trained to think if we did not document it, it did not happen. We have turned our actual lives into content, constantly performing for an audience that isn't even really watching.

There is freedom in the undocumented. If you stop worrying about how a moment looks, you will start noticing how it actually feels. You no longer ask, "How will this look?" and instead ask, "How does this feel?"

Privacy is not just having secrets. It is having a life that belongs to you and not a data center. Some things should not be for sale. Some things are better when they are just yours.

What if the most important thing you did today was something nobody ever found out about?

Not feeling at all into festivities this year.

Ended the work year on medical leave for / . Not visiting family, because my gorgeous Phoebe-cat has end stage renal disease and is declining; I am devastated and constantly worrying. All friends are away doing their own things, and usual social activities are on pause until mid January.

So anyway I’m around to chat to anyone else who is feeling isolated or down.

What's something that you're grateful to your younger self for?

I was thinking today how grateful I am that, despite growing up in an anti-intellectual environment, I was so drawn to art that despite others trying to dissuade me, I spent time studying it.

It's been one of the great richnesses of my life to heave learned about art.

I'm trying out because I'm genuinely curious about what other people might thank their younger selves for.
