Dear artists who moved over to Bluesky: Please tag your work as NSFW. It won't affect you in the algorithm if you do, but it will make it so that 16 year olds (like me) don't see your dick, tits, boobies and balls all over the timeline. Thanks and kind regards.

Merry Christmas to everybody, except that dude who works for Elastic, who decided to drop an unauthenticated exploit for MongoDB on Christmas Day, that leaks memory and automates harvesting secrets (e.g. database passwords)

CVE-2025-14847 aka MongoBleed

Exp: github.com/joe-desimone/mongob

This one is incredibly widely internet facing and will very likely see mass exploitation and impactful incidents

Impacts every MongoDB version going back a decade.

Shodan dork: product:"MongoDB"

In case you missed it, the Guppe discussion group system has permanently closed down.

However, there is a replacement discussion system run by Fedigroups.social. I've tried to list the active public FediGroups at:

➡️ fedi.directory/tag/fediverse-g

- To follow a listed group, copy-paste its Fediverse address into the search box in Mastodon, then click "Follow".

- To post to a group, mention its account in your post.

Happy holidays, fediverse!

I got you a megathrust earthquake, soil liquefaction, spine-tingling papers about the way our networks confound knowledge, and a PDF in a pear tree. It's my wrap on a year of trying to make sense of how we make sense of what's happening to us.

I won't share Hank's video because it feels like spreading pro-big tech propaganda, but you can find it on his YouTube channel.

The video, imo, feels way out of character for Hank. It's confusing, manic, and out of touch.

The video lacks any coherent takeaway, besides the encouragement for his audience to continue arguing over the semantics of water consumption, and not the material harms these data centers and their energy use cause local communities.

The debate over AI energy and water consumption doesn't exist in a vacuum.

Hank's video, too, exists in a moment of protest. Working class communities are fighting against data center proposals in their small towns. Increased cost of living is a key argument of the protest.

To discuss AI water consumption without contextualizing the debate; without sharing who's affected if Hank is wrong, is a dishonest omission.

Hank makes no mention of any of this until the last 30 secs of a 24 min video.

Gosh, there is just so much to love about a new essay from @kissaneErin Kissane, even when it’s about so much heaviness like widespread memory leak. Erin is like a superfan for readers because she unpacks topics with such care and wit. This stuff seriously just rewires my brains.
