What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

RE: infosec.exchange/@Em0nM4stodon

This is probably the largest reason that I deleted my traditional social media accounts. Instagram and Twitter may seem harmless if you try to curate them properly. But in reality, given the lack of control that one has over the platforms, there's no way to ensure that you're just seeing "good stuff."

Social media is junk food. At least here you can choose to eat your veggies.

Tested the DisplayPort support on my Macbook today and it works reasonable well, just that presumably the firmware doesn't detect frequencies/resolutions properly and my 165-180Hz display gets capped to 144Hz, which is still good!

But that's also probably nothing that can be fixed sadly and it's probably a firmware issue as macos has the same restrictions.

I created a starter pack for the folks who regularly (occasionally?) are on @webologyJeff Triplett 's Office Hours calls. If I left you off it's because:

- I didn't link the Mastodon user to the actual human being (propbably)
- Your account isn't "discoverable" and can't be added to a starter pack (this is in settings - ping me and I can help you change it if you want.)

Be very mindful about the content you consume online.

You might think you are above its negative influence on your mood and thoughts, but you aren't. Nobody is.

The content you consume influences the way you think over time. Even if you are on a platform to fight the opposition, what the algorithm is feeding you there will have an influence on yourself over time.

Be careful what you feed to your brain.

@mrshsaxon Yes. There are two things happening here to make Covid seem invisible:

1. Concerted widespread effort to push Covid issues and effects under the rug and say it's "behind us" since we started getting vaccinated in 2021. Which in itself was an extension of the "push aside the fallen and get back to your stations!" back-to-work propaganda campaign in 2020, prioritizing "the economy" over human lives. (It's been off-keel ever since, because real "economy" is made of people, not stocks.)

@mrshsaxon

2. The Facebook effect, where people publicize life highlights, but don't bring up struggles nearly as much, and withdraw from public AND private life when ill or disabled, largely because of how we treat illness, disability, and poverty in this country.
So you'll see people posting about their new job or new baby, but not so much new chronic fatigue / autoimmune symptoms, loss of employment and eviction notice. You'll get an invitation to a wedding, but not to the hospital. Etc.

I miss when buying technology meant you actually owned it. Now...

❌ Your car needs a subscription for heated seats.
❌ Your printer won't print black text because you're out of Cyan.
❌ Your OS serves you ads in the start menu.
❌ Your "Smart" home stops working if the company goes bankrupt.

I don't need more AI features. I need "dumb" tech that just does what it’s told and lasts for 10 years. But where's the share holder value in that right?

Bystander effect scary! A guy collapsed on a crowded street, and for some reason it formed an area around him where no one was. We checked on him and called an ambulance, and only after that someone called a local first aider (aka staff of the train station nearby, with a first aid kit and an extra special training).

First seconds and minutes matter in an emergency. Don't be a bystander. Get that first aid certification you always wanted but never had time and energy to complete. If nothing else, at least read up on riot medicine and stay alert.

2.41.0 is out!

github.com/CatimaLoyalty/Andro

This release adds support for UTF-8 barcodes (by default, the encoding will be extracted from the pkpass file or auto-detected if set otherwise).

It also contains some bugfixes and UI tweaks.

Due to Google dropping Android 5 compatibility in their libraries, this will be the last release available for Android 5.

Coming soon to an app store near you.

👁️ focus shift..

Attn: This is now an 🫂 outreach channel of Social coding commons, under custodianship and tender care of humane tech community gardeners.

Specifically this a 🪵 ..

My personal account has moved (temporarily) to @humanetechHumane Tech Community in a custodianship (janitoring) 🎩

With my support by @nlnet ending, how I continue to foster and nourish my work, depends on 🌱 sustenance I manage to find, as I am out of money totally.

Such is life, hence focusing on now, really :)

Profile card with 2 dream jobs I pursue under the banner of Social coding commons: Social experience designer and dreamwalker respectively. My hobby is dreamer.
