What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

Just realized:

I was at the ER yesterday, and the people wearing masks were mainly the patients and the lower ranking and/or non-white staff members

Its never been easier to tell at a glance how trustworthy any random human in public is, bc there is no excuse for not wearing one at this point. None of the staff at the ER who treated me poorly wore one, but all of the staff who were kind to me, did. There was very little if any deviation from this pattern. The same attributes that make a medical provider trustworthy also result in them choosing to mask, and vice versa.

The thing about a medical excuse not to wear one is that such a situation doesnt exist. If youre "too sick to wear a mask" youre also infinitely more vulnerable to the infections they would shield you from in the first place. You would be doing things like social distancing or fully avoiding crowded/enclosed spaces bc even minor infections could land you in the hospital. You would be loudly in support of other people masking bc you are the very person those masks protect. There is also no such thing as a medical provider who doesnt need to mask.

If you want other people to know youre a safe person, wear a fkn mask. If you dont, we see you, bc you are wearing your trustworthiness right on your face.

If Loops supported non-public visibility settings too, and we implemented local-only, unlisted, local-only unlisted and follower only, are there any others you'd like to see?

Off the top of my head, I can think of a "password protected" scope that is local-only and unlisted, and requires a specific password (that can be pre-filled via query params) to view.

Let's hear your ideas 💡

These researchers aren’t wealthy. They stake their professional reputations on this work. If they get it wrong, their careers suffer real consequences.

The Palantir rep has dozen other tech companies that would hire him tomorrow. If this job doesn’t work out, there’s always the next one. The stakes are fundamentally different.

Adrienne Fichter and Marguerite Meyer did rigorous investigative journalism. They documented their sources. They filed FOIA requests. They read government reports. They interviewed officials. That’s what it looks like to speak truth to power.

When Palantir published their “correction,” they didn’t back down. They pointed out *exactly* what was false about Palantir’s response.

That, right there, is the difference between journalism and PR, if anyone still needed proof.

If you think this is a niche national interest story, think again, because Palantir are spreading their influence all over Europe.

Their software is used by ICE to track and deport migrants in the U.S., and in military targeting systems.

German civil society organizations are now citing the Swiss findings in their fight against Palantir’s expansion into German police forces.

Scrutiny is essential at this stage.

When journalists investigate and document *with proof*, the playbook comes out: Deny, obfuscate, claim they’re “misrepresenting” work that they don’t want scrutinized, mobilize the allies on LinkedIn, and bury critics in corporate double-speak.

Adrienne Fichter and Marguerite Meyer did excellent work. They deserve our support, not tech bros calling them “luddites” while Palantir rewrites what they actually reported.

I *will* repeat their names so they’re not just “some journalists” somewhere.

Their investigation speaks for itself. So does Palantir’s response. That tells you everything you need to know about who’s operating in good faith.

If you see something you like on here, don't be scared to give it a favourite ⭐ !

If you really like something, you might want to also boost it 🔁 (which shares it with your followers).

There is no algorithm on here, so you can like and share whatever you want without any additional side effects.

Your timeline on here is entirely in your direct control, it isn't going to push stuff at you or hide stuff just because you liked or shared something.

Playground setup with Raspberry Pi 5 and Mikrotik hEX router.

The Pi, with a M.2 HAT+ Compact, is running Raspberry Pi OS Desktop.

The hEX is running RouterOS 7.20.6, without a default configuration. Right now it's acting more like a switch.

I'm using Raspberry Pi Connect to access the Pi from outside my home network, and mostly ssh and WinBox to access the devices when inside, but Connect also works here.

Photo of Raspberry Pi 5 in a standard white case and a MikroTik hEX router, sitting next to each other, and on top of a USB-C docking stationScreen shot from Raspberry Pi Connect, showing a device named "playground". The device is online and offers "Screen sharing" and "Remote shell" access

RE: mastodon.social/@256/115826819

I'm a linux boi and I never actually used Windows 8, but, visually, Zune / Metro style is probably my favourite UI design trend of the past 25 years

alt text for image in quoted toot: Photos of Zune HD, a mostly-touchscreen music and media player, with case finished in brushed aluminium (or at least similar look) and black (probably plastic). The screen shows what I guess is the main menu of the device, consisting of "music", "videos", "pictures", "radio", "marketplace", "social", and "more" in a column spanning the entire screen, all lowercase, in a sans-serif font, with small icons on the left of each word. A brief news story about the then-upcoming device, with some tech specs, is below.

This — exactly this! — and also note first and note repeatedly that the racist right-wing video about Somali daycare is a bunch of bullshit. They don’t appear to have even found any fraud at all. (They visited day cares before they open and cried “scandal!!” because there’s no kids there, stuff like that.)

It’s •exactly• what Needham says (via @atruparAaron Rupar), and it doesn’t even matter what really happened. Create chaos, invent fraud, lie to justify more chaos, repeat. journa.host/@atrupar/115826096

Oof. Those poor Swiss nightclub patrons didn't stand a chance. That's highly flammable sound proofing foam above pyrotechnics. I don't know why both haven't been universally banned in clubs.

If you go to a club, or any place you're not familiar with like a hotel, find and walk to the nearest fire exits. clock where they are. you may have to get to them in the smoke filled dark to survive.

A band on stage with some sort of sparklers going off which have just ignited egg-crate style sound proofing foam covering a significant portion of the roof.
