As a Canadian this mornings news is extremely disturbing. The Trump administration since its earliest days has questioned the sovereignty of Canada and now its shown it has no problems ignoring the rule of law.
In all honesty Canadians should prepare themselves mentally for some form of occupation. As I say this it sounds like science fiction, I wish it were.

Seit fast einer Woche auf Mastodon und mir wurde gerade erst so richtig bewusst, wie toll es eigentlich ist, dass meine Timeline wirklich mir gehört und nicht von einem angelernten Nutzungsprofil kuratiert wird.

Ich hab mich dabei erwischt, bei Interaktionen schon automatisch an mögliche Auswirkungen auf meinen "Algorithmus" zu denken.

Was für eine Erleichterung!
So als wäre ich aus einem Albtraum aufgewacht.

The US used invaded and occupied Latin American countries in the first half of the 1900s, but after the formation of the United Nations it was more involved in funding and supporting civil wars. Exceptions like the invasion of Panama have been criticized in the world community, and the mining of Nicaragua's harbours was a crime per the International Court of Justice. That kind of normalization is extremely dangerous.

Military action against a sovereign state is illegal under the UN charter. There are two exceptions: self-defense, and UN Security Council approval.

Heads of state have personal immunity while in office from prosecution in foreign courts.

This attack is a serious breakdown of international norms.

@cksChris Siebenmann I read your post about tls certs. I think you have before mentioned that you use Prometheus? If so you should look into the blackbox_exporter. We use it to monitor the certs of our web services, of course there are more certs that web certs, but it at least handles those super well.

Recursive Language Models

We study allowing large language models (LLMs) to process arbitrarily long prompts through the lens of inference-time scaling. We propose Recursive Language Models (RLMs), a general inference strategy that treats long prompts as part of an external environment and allows the LLM to programmatically examine, decompose, and recursively call itself over snippets of the prompt. We find that RLMs successfully handle inputs up to two orders of magnitude beyond model context windows and, even for shorter prompts, dramatically outperform the quality of base LLMs and common long-context scaffolds across four diverse long-context tasks, while having comparable (or cheaper) cost per query.

You can't beat the US military, itself.

We literally have caches of munitions and equipment in ice caves and various other places throughout the world. - A ride to the hospital costs $5,000 and is not covered by taxes/govt. College isnt covered. We have minimal pensions or worker support. Et cetera.

All the public money that could go to social needs goes to violence.

And we're good at it.

You have to go after leadership (not a threat from me or a call to violence). The think tanks, the political apparatus, the corporations that profit from war efforts, the billionaire oligarchs.

The "vote them out" stage is in one year and we have no idea if we'll even have a means to democratically transfer power.

You are in it now. There is no waiting. Nazi Germany, Fascist Italy, North Korea, Oligarch Russia - if you've ever asked yourself what you would do in those times and places... you are doing it right now.

If you have means and power, sort out ways to counter the current regime's leadership and initiatives.

If you don't have that power and are just a "normal
person with a family and job", then actively join and build Community and Mutual Aid in your neighborhood. You need to feed each other. Shelter each other. Care for each other's kids. Actively take care of each other. This isn't kumbaya woo-woo feel-good shit. This is removing the threat they have over our heads.

No one wants to and many can't fight back because we are all wage slaves who cant afford not to work for capitalist corporations that fund the war effort.

So build apparatus that lets us get out from under the capitalist boot. Build it. Now. Right at your doorstep. Go... GO!

Jaana was a distinguished engineer at GitHub and is now a principal engineer at Google. I expect to see more testimonials from accomplished software engineers in 2026 about how AI agents are making them more productive.

Engineers posting about how AI tools don’t work will increasingly look like a skill issue than a problem with AI tools.
