It's sad to see instances shut down without warning, I'm working on a short term and long term plan

The short term plan: Personal Archive Node (PAN) - The Mini-PDS

PAN will work with Pixelfed, Loops, Mastodon and other projects, and you can self-host or use a trusted PAN server, giving you peace of mind knowing *most* of your data is easily recoverable + migratable to another server, should you ever need it ✨

The long term plan: Personal Data Vault (PDV) - DID Layer for ActivityPub

Over the weekend I got Pi-hole up and running (first time user), and it sure is eye-opening seeing what your devices are up to.

The screenshot that's all red, for example, is my Samsung smart TV, which is constantly talking to Netflix (and other domains, even when using my PC and not interacting with the "smart hub".) I haven't opened the Netflix app in at least two weeks.

The other one all in green (allowed for now), is my Echo Dot with Alexa. That thing is talking to Amazon constantly...

Table-like dark interface showing repeated timestamped DNS entries (2026-01-04 with times from 21:20:10 to 21:22:16) with columns for a red blocked symbol, record TYPE (A or AAAA), and DOMAIN (logs.netflix.com).Dark-themed log table showing timestamps, green status icons, record type "A", and domain names (api.amazon.com, various aws.dev diagnostic networking hostnames, cloudfront.net, msh.amazon.com, api.amazonalexa.com).

It’s a new year — I finally have a page for my upcoming book INDIA STREET LETTERING on the project website indiastreetlettering.com/india, and the RSVPs for the book’s launch in Bangalore are now open champaca.in/products/india-str (books will also start shipping to Kickstarter backers shortly).

I still find it hard to believe that I made a book, and all this is actually happening 🫠 😭

Poster for the book launch of India Street Lettering happening on January 17, 2026 at Champaca Bookstore Vasanthnagar (Bangalore) from 6:00 pm onwards.

Currently sat enjoying the passive solar gain of south facing windows. Despite the snow on the ground, the sky is blue, and the sun is out. Trying to find the courage to take on a pair of Schwalbe marathon winter tyres in single combat...

ended and I went back to on . It was a low key day.

A couple things I've continued to do since starting vacation:

1.) The hour-long solo hikes before work. This has done wonders for my .

2.) Decreasing my "reliance" on . Still using the flip phone for daily comms. My is on silent, usage is significantly less, and only check in with notifications and messages a couple times a day.

Not that I am a sedentary person. Quite the opposite but as a and for a , self-care time is, by several orders of magnitude, significantly less.

AI models don’t really 'get' the BSDs. As a result, they often provide incomplete, imprecise, or flat-out wrong answers by defaulting to Linux paradigms. When it comes to illumos-based systems, they just completely lose the plot.

This is becoming a serious issue for the BSDs and illumos ecosystems. We are seeing entire websites flooded with AI-generated tutorials and guides that are totally incorrect. Most people don't realize this; they follow the instructions, fail, and then assume that the BSDs doesn't work well or are 'unstable' because they have supposedly changed since the guide was written.

Luckily, some people eventually find my blog, reach out, and finally understand what's actually going on. Others, unfortunately, end up on major social sites or comments, claiming that these systems are broken.

In 2026, one of our greatest challenges will be teaching people how to vet their sources and filter information.
And I see this as a very, very uphill battle.
