What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

@dansup @wettachWettach (WGW) did you fix the accounts in limbo? fix activity pub that was broken for a year?

have you attempted to help those folks who thought they could migrate off pixelfed.social and lost all of their followers?

is that even possible still?

Pixelfed.social today remains a silo that you cannot migrate out of. Yes?

why is the account migration feature still active on the website if the fix has not shipped?

This is negligence on your part.

These were the only two actions related to GitHub originating from my IP address over the last several hours.

This is bullshit.

I am going to bet the rate limits got bumped due to LLM scraping. Fscking clowns. ๐Ÿคก

"By a 4:1 ratio, polls show the American people oppose the use of military force for regime change in Venezuela โ€” including the strike that led to Maduroโ€™s capture over the weekend."

Started blogging in โ€™95. Nearly all siteโ€™s my content from the past 30 years is still up. Sadly, the same canโ€™t be said for most third-party content I linked to. Happily, the Internet Archive Wayback Machine Link Fixer solves much of this.

Fediverse account backups via 3rd party FOSS service

Personal Archive Node (PAN) is quite brilliant, its compatible with most fediverse software already, and uses a dual strategy for data backup, with one being adaptable to most fediverse software via adapters.

While not exactly ideal, PAN solves the issue of unforseen instance shutdowns in a short term fashion, while paving the way for a long term, more efficient solution โœจ

More details soon.

To all of the people worried about being 'left behind' by AI and who believe that AI is as transformational as the web:

I was an early adopter of the web. I had a 9,600 modem. I wrote web pages that had graceful fallback for browsers that predated the img tag. I dealt with the differences between Netscape Navigator 2.0 and Internet Explorer 2.0. I was even guilty of writing web pages that were 'Best viewed in Netscape Navigator 2.0'. I learned about the 10-10-10 rule (as web page should load in 10 seconds on a 14.4 Kb/s MODEM, have all of the key details visible on a 10" monitor, and have no more than 10 points per page).

A lot of the best web developers never experienced this era. We're almost at the point where the majority of them were not even born while I was doing this. And yet, being very late to the party hasn't been a problem for them.

If anything coming out of the bubble is as transformative as the web, you have plenty of time to catch up once it's stabilised into something of long-term value.

@molly0xfffMolly White there is at least one account on TikTok impersonating you by reposting all your content but with an extra "f" at the end of the username. It seems to have about the same number of followers as the account whose username matches your username here, which I presume is legit but maybe I shouldn't presume that

We're about to see a transformation in software engineering, and yes, it's because of LLMs.

Let me explain.

In the same way that the assembly line did for the manufacture of goods, I believe LLMs will allow us to have standardized patterns to enable us to rapidly make software.

Frameworks like Django or Rails allowed us to rapidly stamp out certain patterns in the past and to prevent developers from committing certain classes of footguns.
