We Can't Say We Didn't Know by Sophie McNeill, 2020

Dispatches from an age of impunity by an award-winning investigative reporter and former foreign correspondent
For more than 15 years, award-winning journalist Sophie McNeill has reported on some of the most war-ravaged and oppressive places on earth, including Syria, Gaza, Yemen, West Bank, Iraq and China.

In We Can't Say We Didn't Know, Sophie tells the human stories of devastation and hope behind the headlines - of children, families and refugees, of Saudi women seeking asylum, struggling doctors, imprisoned Uyghurs and Hong Kong protesters. These innocent civilians bear the brunt of the lawlessness of the current age of impunity, where war crimes go unpunished and human rights are abused. Many risk everything they know to stand up for what they believe in and to be on the right side of history, no matter how daunting or impossible it might appear, and their courage is extraordinary and inspiring.

I am continually impressed at the ability of giant orgs to succeed despite themselves.

I am reminded of saying that has been attributed to both Warren Buffett and Peter Lynch.

"Go for a business that any idiot can run, because sooner or later any idiot probably is going to be running it."

A few days ago, a client’s data center (well, actually a server room) "vanished" overnight. My monitoring showed that all devices were unreachable. Not even the ISP routers responded, so I assumed a sudden connectivity drop. The strange part? Not even via 4G.

I then suspected a power failure, but the UPS should have sent an alert.

The office was closed for the holidays, but I contacted the IT manager anyway. He was home sick with a serious family issue, but he got moving.

To make a long story short: the company deals in gold and precious metals. They have an underground bunker with two-meter thick walls. They were targeted by a professional gang. They used a tactic seen in similar hits: they identify the main power line, tamper with it at night, and send a massive voltage spike through it.

The goal is to fry all alarm and surveillance systems. Even if battery-backed, they rarely survive a surge like that. Thieves count on the fact that during holidays, owners are away and fried systems can't send alerts. Monitoring companies often have reduced staff and might not notice the "silence" immediately.

That is exactly what happened here. But there is a "but": they didn't account for my Uptime Kuma instance monitoring their MikroTik router, installed just weeks ago. Since it is an external check, it flagged the lack of response from all IPs without needing an internal alert to be triggered from the inside.

The team rushed to the site and found the mess. Luckily, they found an emergency electrical crew to bypass the damage and restore the cameras and alarms. They swapped the fried server UPS with a spare and everything came back up.

The police warned that the chances of the crew returning the next night to "finish" the job were high, though seeing the systems back online would likely make them move on. They also warned that thieves sometimes break in just to destroy servers to wipe any video evidence.

Nothing happened in the end. But in the meantime, I had to sync all their data off-site (thankfully they have dual 1Gbps FTTH), set up an emergency cluster, and ensure everything was redundant.

Never rely only on internal monitoring. Never.

I'm thriving and the most productive and hopeful for the fediverse, than I've been in years.

Unfortunately, there is a concerted effort to convince people otherwise, I honestly wonder why.

Such intensity could do wonders if used in the right way, for many projects.

Rather than speculate, let’s focus on what matters: shipping, stability, and making ActivityPub better for everyone ❤️

toot that says:

"#pixelfed #loops Heads up folks, DanSup is going through a very dark period of time right now. Having lost a lot of trust in the community, Pixelfed being abandoned essentially and all of the missed deadlines in 2025 on top of Loops being a priority, it's going to be a difficult 2026 for him. Many of us are concerned of this mental well being. For pixelfed, in its current broken state with Activity Pub being broken and neglected features it's going to require concentration."

Unsolicited Advice for First-Time Authors

You all know how I feel about vanity publishers, companies that prey on writers who do not understand their rights and charge obscene amounts of money without actually providing any services or support. Well, recently I spoke to a colleague who worked with a traditional publisher who gave them a different type of contract than what I am used to, and I had thoughts about it.

New blogpost: AI will compromise your cybersecurity posture
rys.io/en/181.html

The way “AI” is going to compromise your cybersecurity is not through some magical autonomous exploitation by a singularity from the outside, but by being the poorly engineered, shoddily integrated, exploitable weak point you would not have otherwise had on the inside.

LLM-based systems are insanely complex. And complexity has real cost and introduces very real risk.

Do you know a good or discussing this discrepancy:

People refering to or with gender (she/he/they instead of 'it') or discussing of (environmental personhood: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Environm ) are often accused of , while it seems completely normal for many to refer to like a person. And is quickly adopted for AI but not enough researched/seen in animals.

I'm searching for human-made material only! 1/2

After last night's huge march that flooded the streets of Minneapolis, Minnesotans are now out bright (actually dark) and early in the freezing cold blockading

This is what we are going to do across the nation. All day I will be posting protest notices and videos and we'll be playing that game where you name your city and I go find your protest for you.

There are a few vocal members of the Pixelfed community that are upset that I'm busy with Loops.

I spent 8 years building Pixelfed, it's the 2nd most popular fediverse platform.

Loops is almost ready for v1.0 release, which I can then jump back full time to Pixelfed again.

8 years. I can't take a few months off?

Like, I never took a vacation until FediCon, and even then it was about Pixelfed.

I understand the frustration, but at the same time, I'm building Loops, not wasting my time.

😔
