What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

Now that we’re home, we were able to dig up a provisional leash that surely will last a few days until we can get a heavy-duty one. And I think I’ll institute a policy of replacing it every year for Christmas, because “it’ll last your dog’s whole life” wasn’t measured against Odins

The two days of not being able to use his halter were difficult because he wasn’t getting his usual sensory feedback and wasn’t aware of how much harder he was pulling me around.

Some time ago I asked my Taiwanese friends to give me a Mandarin name. They chose 必勝 (Bìshèng in pinyin, Pi-sheng in Wade–Giles).
It means “to be bound to win”, “cannot fail”. It is also the name of Pizza Hut in Taiwan (必勝客). This is because I’m famous for the time I ate a large Pizza Hut pizza on my own and was unwell for a whole night.

I'm extremely proud of this name.

@zkatkat Looking forward to reading the "Why not LLMs?" list since these instances seem to vary a lot in degrees of concerning. For example, the Calibre changlog makes it sound like it's simply adding functionality to call local models via LM Studio. That's way different than projects that use LLM-generated code. I think? Genuinely looking forward to reading more.

Everybody is worried about Greenland.

The best way to avoid a lot of problems is for the US and Danish armed forces to declare some form of whiskey war.

US Special forces, seal team 6 or something, land in a remote part of Greenland, hoist a giant US flag, declare victory and go home after a few weeks.

3 days later, Danish special forces land in the same spot, take down the US flag and raise an enormous Danish flag, declare victory and go home after a few weeks.

This New York Times video journalism -- caution, it's graphic -- about Trump goons' murder of a Minneapolis woman is essential. No both-sides bullshit when one party -- the regime and its vile propagandists -- is relentlessly and provably lying.

I'm often hard on the Times for its relentless failures to properly cover this regime, but this piece is the real thing.

I know probably nobody cares about this on here, but:

if you're writing a song, and you don't want it to be boring, you can use more than one sentence structure in the song. Like,

"I'm gonna do the thing. I'm doing the thing. We did the thing. The thing got did, yeahhh" is not great. Adding adjectives to it doesn't really make it more compelling. That isn't to say there isn't room for some "I'm gonna do the thing", but you don't want it to be the only thing right?

If you haven't protested before now, people who've been protesting from the start will be completely fucking thrilled to have you or any other newcomer. No "where were you before." People do that shit online, not in the real world where we need every person we can get.

Discover your community of street protesters and discover some of the most awesome and fun people you've ever met. The harder core the anti-Nazi, the less purity testing and pretense.

Even though tonight's vigils will be...

RE: toot.cat/@zkat/115860108367572

I am not dissing this idea or list at all. I like the idea of it, and all the use cases currently on display for uses of AI /LLMs are some of the worst examples of using it, making LLMs totally shit at many things. I definitely do not like the “Jesus (in the form of LLM ) take the wheel” idea of coding. It lessens everyone by robbing us of learning opportunities and the joy of discovery and mastery of a skillset.

That said , I think there are reasonable practices and use cases of true AI Assisted coding , stress on “Assisted”, where the ultimate last hands on the code should be a human be it in the form of a thorough review and testing. This won’t reduce the amount of bugs that slip through but how would that be any different than now?

This comes from looking at the KeePassXC response to concerns of them using AI/LLMs, and their response seems pretty reasonable to me, where nothing that goes in, is not reviewed and they’re very open about its usage. Whether or not this actually plays out in practice, time will tell.

What I'm listening to today: "Hardware Jam 0006 // Shared System and Friends // 162bpm atmospheric drum n' bass", kaleidasonic

This is a neat mix of a classical 90s Drum & Bass beat with modern modular-synthesizer sound design; it starts with 2 minutes of random-notes ambient, then drops an Amen and a lovely chonky bass and keeps evolving in interesting new directions for the entire 15 minute runtime. (Those without long attention spans may wanna quit around minute 7.)

What I'm listening to today: "Ambient improvisation 4 (Soma Enner + Cosmos)", Più

Cosmos is an "asymmetric looper"—a loop pedal whose loops are of varying lengths and so can drift in phase against each other. Here it's fed with tiny sound fragments (with such sources as small plastic frog, whose shape is sonified by rubbing it against the Enner's case and spring reverb) to build up an all-enveloping ambient soundscape partway between a rainpipe and a horror movie score.

Every natural number is the sum of forty-nine palindromes
Article by William D. Banks
In collections: Fun maths facts, Integerology
It is shown that the set of decimal palindromes is an additive basis for the natural numbers. Specifically, we prove that every natural number can be expressed as the sum of forty-nine (possibly zero) decimal palindromes.

since I can't actively work on it right now: I feel like the thing the escodb i/o scheduler does must be very similar to things that compilers, CPUs, and disk controllers do, i.e. rearrange a bunch of data accesses under some constraints to make them go faster. but I've no idea what to search for to find prior art I should be aware of. anyone know?

Per NYT:

Asked in a wide-ranging interview with The New York Times if there were any limits on his global powers, Mr. Trump said: “Yeah, there is one thing. My own morality. My own mind. It’s the only thing that can stop me.”

Trump Lays Out a
Vision of Power
Restrained Only by 'My
Own Morality'
On topic after topic, President Trump
made clear in an interview that he would
be the arbiter of any limits to his
authorities, not international law or
