What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

I've started a new series of articles on writing a PBT library using capabilities (and capture checking): nrinaudo.github.io/articles/ka

This hasn't gotten into the wild bits (test case reduction gets a little weird), but I feel there's already enough interesting material to start sharing. Let me know your thoughts!

Suddenly a loud bang from the lab at the local club ‼️ 💥🤯

Luckily nothing happened to the people in there, but I guess it’s safe to say that this vintage capacitor decided to quit its job 😂

Always wear safety glasses 🥽 when testing and troubleshooting , especially if it’s vintage gear where you have no knowledge of its state and health☝🏼

Wow, this is ground breaking science..

Scientists have shown that a non-invasive sound stimulation of the brain at a specific frequency can clear toxic proteins linked to Alzheimer’s disease, an advance that could lead to low-cost therapy.
Now, for the first time, scientists have demonstrated that auditory stimulation at 40Hz can significantly alter amyloid protein levels

Imagine a low cost treatment that most people could afford.

This is a second thread today about the issues hashtagged below. The first thread is here: toad.social/@wdlindsy/11588869

"Jonathan Ross, the ICE agent who murdered a Minneapolis woman named Renee Cook last week by shooting her three times in the head, has cemented the public view of an incipient American archetype, a persona that will play a major role in the nation’s history over the coming next few years:"

I missed this EXCELLENT news from last week: management at Code for America was stalling negotiations with the union over its new contract, so the union threatened to strike. Anyway now there’s a tentative agreement, weird how that happens statescoop.com/code-for-americ

Tom Casavant shared the below article:

There Is One Fediverse. There Are A Thousand Ways To Join It.

jaz-michael king @blog@jaz.co.uk

When I showed my sister-in-law my toot.wales feed, she gave the response I believe most people genuinely feel: "It is lovely! If only there was an app." She does not want a protocol or a lesson in the Fediverse; she just wants a simple way to connect with her community. That is why we have built the Tŵt app. It is a straightforward, bilingual, and jargon-free front door for Wales on the social web. Here is why we are choosing clarity over complexity to build a better social experience.

RE: jaz.co.uk/2026/01/13/there-is-

"There is no “pick a server” screen or “find your instance”. There is no friction. This is not “a Mastodon app”; it is the Tŵt app, purpose-built for our community."

This is a vision of the Social Web which I'm sure many won't agree with or, potentially, won't even understand.

But, like @jazjaz :twt: :wales_flag: I'm pretty certain this is the future. We need to make spaces which are accessible to the general user, that just take them where they want to go without a scavenger hunt.

I'm so excited for this app and seeing how it can serve the existing community, Welsh people, and everyone else who wants to call it home 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

Was out for my morning walk hearing about ! I'm more of a lurker even on Web 2.0 social media (like didn't even use twitter when it was good, fb for old contacts) besides twitch, discord, and lemmy but glad to push for a federated Web 3.0, just need the folks and the network effects to kick in.

decent growth rate on the forkiverse this week. if it continues at this rate (i think it almost certainly will) we should be at 213 million users by next year. although obviously this is an estimate, and it's possible that the growth rate increases.

a screen shot of new users on the forkiverese (4,106) and the growth rate in a week +410,500%

Dear Fedi friends, some good news:

Today I learned from @liaizonwakest ⁂ that the Parisian art space @palaisdetokyo is on the fediverse.

I was curious about the server it's hosted on, so I checked it out and more good news: there are several cultural institutions on it.

Turns out, it's an initiative by the French Ministry of Culture: a Mastodon server to share "cultural news in a way that is freer, open and independent" (their words)!

THANK YOU @cercleReseauCulture.fr for being here!
