My plan is to move away from the big languages and start using more off-the-beaten path languages. So Erlang/Elixir/Gleam, Odin is on my list, Elm, Zig I've been doing already a little.
I'm already boycotting Ruby and Python for many years for other than recent reasons. My doubts about Rust remain, let's see how things unfold.
I'm also planning on a "classics" project again - this time with Cobol and possibly Ada.

@pluralisticCory Doctorow summing up my thoughts on where the current conversation is leading us towards:

I'm sorry. I know that when we talk about "digital sovereignty," we're obliged to talk about how we can build more data-centres that we can fill up with money-losing chips from American silicon monopolists in the hopes of destroying as many jobs as possible while blowing through our clean energy goals and enshittifying as much of our potable water as possible.

I don't have any advice for how to do that. I'm sorry!

I remember mentioning this book [1] on Twitter or G+, maybe 10 years ago. I found it used somewhere. I think I was soliciting recommendations for books like it by which I meant short readable self-contained accounts of some subject, not necessarily completely rigorous, with exercises *and* solutions.

Anyway, 10 years later I realise this was a really good book to read. I think it gave me the beginnings of good intuition about SDEs [2] and I couldn't have guessed then how useful that would be today.

[1] "An Introduction to Stochastic Processes in Physics" by Don S Lemons

“Move the front window to right edge of the screen”
“No, lower”
“Wait, no, don’t resize it just move it!”
“Why are you tiling the windows?? Move all windows to their original position.”
“No, not the position at boot! Move all windows to their position 3 minutes ago. Then move the window that was in the foreground at that time to the left edge of the screen, 100px lower than its current vertical position.”
“Yessss!! I did it !! This is so productive!!!”

Hey, I survived a surgery today which included 3 operations. Very happy :) The surgeon had some worries, but the best case happened. And everyone was nice at the hospital.

Nurses were giving me treats as I was practicing my Dutch every time they approach, which made them smile 😊

Next few days will be about recovery, but what a nice start for the year health-wise :)

RE: mastodon.bsd.cafe/@stefano/115

UPDATE: I just had a talk with two of the owners (whom I've known for years) and one of the young developers who was on yesterday's call. She confirmed that this manager's behavior was unmanageable. High-strung and narcissistic, he had apparently been let go from his previous company due to his inability to work with colleagues and owners alike. It seems he was even trying to boss the owners around.

To make a long story short, the entire sysadmin team threatened to quit if I stopped collaborating with the company. As a result, the owners summoned the manager in the late morning, and he resigned. They are reverting to the previous management structure (led by one of the owners). They might drop a few projects, but they said they prefer returning to a more "human" way of running the business - which is what always set them apart in the past.

I told them I'll think about it. If things are truly as they say (and I have no reason to doubt them yet), I'll propose a 6-month trial collaboration to see how things actually evolve. I'm aware it's easy to "pass the buck" - was it really just the manager's fault, or are the owners using him as a scapegoat now that things went south? However, given our history, I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt for now.

@pluralisticCory Doctorow for the win: "All I've got is an idea for how we can make *insanely profitable products* that people *really want to buy*, that will insulate us from cyberattacks by US tech giants who are in thrall to Trump, and that *Americans* will pay us to use in order to free themselves from the tech giants who abuse them, too."
