If you’re in the US, are you planning to participate in a general strike on Jan 23? I’m wondering how widespread this idea is, or if it’s just contained to Minnesota. I’m self employed, but I guess I’ll take the day off.

"What if salaries are not solely decided by the market but by the people who do the work and by how much they think they’ll need for a living? What if people could change their roles within a team without the fear of earning less or having less say? Would it enable more collaboration instead of just advancing individual career paths?"

I’ve been in dark places recently. I didn’t know if I was gonna make it through the holidays. Lots of depression, anxiety, and drinking.

Man, did I need a lift. And I got it.

My lovely friend @reslRachel E. S. Lösche visited us in Portland. We met for vegan food and uplifting conversation. She also brought her rad friend @dariusDarius Kazemi who I met for the first time at lunch. We have tons in common and I’m grateful she introduced us.

What a gift. This was a good day. ❤️

The three of us, close together shoulder-to-shoulder outside on urban sidewalk. We’re all smiling and wearing warm clothes. I have sea foam glasses, a beanie, a puffy jacket, and a long beard. Rachel has a beanie, a jacket, and headphones around her neck. Darius has red glasses, a short beard, and a sweater.

"We must rapidly begin the shift from a thing-oriented society to a person-oriented society. When machines and computers, profit motives and property rights, are considered more important than people, the giant triplets of racism, extreme materialism, and militarism are incapable of being conquered." americanrhetoric.com/speeches/

If you're a PostgreSQL db admin that wants to volunteer a few hours - please DM me.

I really want to make sure we do this migration right so we don't lose any data.

I'm a linux admin in my own right but PostgreSQL is another beast.

I know when I need to ask for some help. I'll send you a Mastodon Canada pin in gratitude.

Just placed an order for a new prototype PCB (Printed Circuit Board) for makers. This one charges NiMH (Nickel-metal Hydride) rechargeable batteries with charging speed options, support for up to 6 cells, temperature sensor, and USB-C plug.

This is a step toward our first accessibility product for blind people to feel visual art through a haptic pen-like stylus interface.

A 3D rendering of a PCB (Printed Circuit Board) with 4 breadboarding or prototyping holes on the left and right sides. There is s space for a USB plug at the bottom with a space for 3 chips at the top. At the upper right is a logo of a brain with the letters BCE overlaid. On the upper right is a part name and version number that says, "BCE-BQ25172DSGR-1" and "v0.0.1.2026.01.18"

i'm going to continue using it for simple projects. really the only thing that i strongly dislike is the GTK3 bits (not the fault of Horizon at all, but very much a thing that causes friction for me the entire time i'm using it)

it seems like you can import KiCAD footprints, and it's reasonably easy to procure those nowadays, so i think the lack of devices in the pool isn't that big of a deal. i'm not sure whether there are any facilities to e.g. generate BGA footprints, but if there aren't i could just use KiCAD scripts for that

There is a massive focus on trying to get Open Source software to the point where governments or big corporations can use them to "increase sovereignty" (which sometimes means a bit of a weird mix of things).
But that can lead to software being pushed towards more and more complex architectures and deployment strategies (think something like a simple collaborative editor needing Kubernetes to be deployable). While governments and certain companies might be able to shoulder that organizational and financial burden this isn't sustainable but wasteful: We should also use the current focus on open source to invest in
- _easier_ deployments
- _simpler_ architectures
- more defined standards to improve composability

The big funding activities can have the effect of just creating more bloated, unwieldy and "enterprisey" solutions when that mode of thinking is exactly what brough on the mess we are in.

I have a fancy new laptop with 64 GB RAM and a semi-competent GPU, so I configured Zed's agent to use a local ollama (via Alpaca) with gpt-oss:20b and asked it to make a relatively simple change across a few files. The GPU usage monitor looked like this for 15 minutes until I gave up, and it never managed to edit a file successfully. But at least I could generate heat to keep my lap warm while offline on a train. The way of the future!

Screenshot of system monitor app showing 2 minutes' history of utilization of an AMD Radeon 860M GPU: 100% utilization; 100% use of 4 GB dedicated memory; 13 GB of shared memory; both fans running at 100%.

Rail Crash

This is not only tragic with 39 confirmed fatalities so far but perplexing:

_rear_ cars of modern new high-speed train carrying 300 derail on recently renewed straight track at high speed

train coincidentally approaching in opposite direction ploughs into the derailed cars and is thrown rolling "into" embankment.
