We the Corporations by Adam Winkler

How American Businesses Won Their Civil Rights

We the Corporations chronicles the revelatory story of one of the most successful, yet least known, "civil rights movements" in American history.
In this groundbreaking portrait of corporate seizure of political power, We the Corporations reveals how American businesses won equal rights and transformed the Constitution to serve the ends of capital.

Corporations—like minorities and women—have had a civil rights movement of their own, and now possess nearly all the same rights as ordinary people. Uncovering the deep historical roots of Citizens United, Adam Winkler shows how that controversial 2010 Supreme Court decision was the capstone of a two-hundred-year battle over corporate personhood and constitutional protections for business.

I have family in #Minnesota, so my posts are more political than usual lately. It seems a bit vapid of me to keep talking about my own hobbies and special interests while such an astonishing crisis of the rule of law becomes increasingly severe in the US, although I know many people would rather not see political posts at all. Here are some of my opinions on recent events:

  • Trump has been impeached 3 times but not removed from office, then there is no branch of government in the US powerful enough to keep Trump’s political power in check. At this point, I never want to hear anyone talk about the United States as though it were a “democracy.” The US ought to be a democracy, but it is not. I will only entertain discussion about how to make the US into a proper democracy.

  • Trump’s administration very deliberately uses Nazi slogans, especially Kristi Neom who is responsible for the current ongoing attack on Minnesota. At this point, if I hear anyone splitting hairs about whether Trump is a fascist/neo-Nazi, and complain about the term “fascism” being over-used and meaningless, I consider them to be a useful idiot at best, or Trump collaborator who is obfuscating truth and justice at worst.

  • The ICE agents who murdered Renee Good blocked access to doctors and EMTs who tried to assist her as she lay dying, to make certain she died from her wounds. This same exact tactic was used when Israeli gangsters fatally beat US citizen Sayfollah Musallet in the West Bank, and used violent force against EMTs from reaching him for three hours to make certain Musallet died from his wounds. For over a decade, US law enforcement agencies receive training from the Israeli military on tactics to repress protest and non-violent resistance. There is much truth in the adage that fascism is what happens when the violence of settler-colonialism against people abroad is redirected against your own people. If you are protesting ICE and CBP but believe the goals of these protests are separate from the issue the Israel/Palestine conflict, I assure you, your movement to bring peace and justice to your country will fail.

That is all.

원제는 “How to make things faster”인데, 원제도, 번역서 제목도 공감한다.
