The Book of Snakes: A Life-Size Guide to Six Hundred Species From Around the World 2ed by Mark O'Shea, 2023

There are over 3,700 species of snake found on every continent except for Antarctica, ranging in size from Barbados’ tiny threadsnake to Southeast Asia’s massive reticulated python. More than any other creature snakes are surrounded by dark, compelling myths and legend, unsurprising since many constrict their prey to death, or kill with a venomous bite...

using a diverse armory of venoms that affect the blood, tissues, organs, and respiration.

However, it is especially true of snakes that the closer you observe them, the more exquisite they are in their intricate geometry of pattern, the fine texture of the overlapping scales, and the intricacies of their multifarious lifestyles. The Book of Snakes profiles 600 significant species from all 32 families—one in six of all known species—to create a beautiful collector’s piece that is both a significant resource for enthusiasts and scholars, and the most visually stimulating guide on the market.

RE: journa.host/@theintercept/1159

Everyone I've talked to who works there is considering finding another job or early retirement.

I don't really know what the solution is here. Definitely Cook has to go, but so does every other executive as well as the board. They're all (or at least almost all) complicit in this.

Behold Australia’s frilled-neck lizard (Chlamydosaurus kingii), a reptile famous for its oversized neck flap! This appendage stands to attention like a satellite dish around this critter’s head when it feels threatened. To deter attackers, this lizard also hisses intensely—and if that doesn’t do the trick, it may turn to another time-tested strategy: running!

The lizard will flee from a foe with wild abandon, legs churning and mouth agape in almost comical fashion, until it reaches the safety of the nearest tree.

With its massive horns and beak-shaped mouth, Triceratops is one of the Museum’s most recognizable dinosaurs. The skull of this 65-million-year-old ceratopsian measures about 8 ft (2.4 m) long—almost a third of its body length. Yet it was much lighter than it looks. In its beak-shaped mouth, Triceratops had between 144 and 160 teeth, which it replaced completely between two and four times over its lifetime.

Atomic Adventures by James Mahaffey, 2017

The latest investigation from acclaimed nuclear engineer and author James Mahaffey unearths forgotten nuclear endeavors throughout history that were sometimes hair-brained, often risky, and always fascinating.
Whether you are a scientist or a poet, pro-nuclear energy or staunch opponent, conspiracy theorist or pragmatist, James Mahaffey's books have served to open up the world of nuclear science like never before.

With clear explanations of some of the most complex scientific endeavors in history, Mahaffey's new book looks back at the atom's wild, secretive past and then toward its potentially bright future.

Mahaffey unearths lost reactors on far flung Pacific islands and trees that were exposed to active fission that changed gender or bloomed in the dead of winter. He explains why we have nuclear submarines but not nuclear aircraft and why cold fusion doesn't exist. And who knew that radiation counting was once a fashionable trend?
