Clare and I went on an impromptu tour of London infrastructure today after unexpectedly ending up at Dishoom Canary Wharf due to a power cut at the Kensington branch.

A ten-minute walk from Canary Wharf took us to the Temple Of Storms (officially the Isle Of Dogs Pumping Station), a grade II* listed building constructed in 1988. While I’m not generally into postmodern architecture, it’s refreshing to see a modern industrial building that isn’t just a metal and concrete box.

A building with grey and brown brick walls supporting a black and white pediment with a huge white fan in the centre. Two thick red brick columns are topped with blue, yellow, and red fins. The building complexly dwarfs its normal-sized door.

Mastodon server admins, important news!

The Mastodon developers are going to stop suggesting mastodon.social as a "default server".

Instead, the "default" server suggestions are going to be ones for a user's language and/or geographical location.

If your server matches these:

- General public server
- Running vanilla Mastodon
- Mastodon Covenant compliant
- Have existed for 1+ year
- Have shut-down & disaster plans

...then see this post for details: mastodon.social/@Mastodon/1159

Costa Ricans Keep Election Ballots at Home in Rare Trust Based Voting System

In her living room, Priscilla Herrera safeguards, alongside Vaquita, her mixed-breed dog, hundreds of ballots for Sunday’s elections in Costa Rica, where citizens are entrusted with helping ensure the transparency of the process. It is a singular case in Latin America, where electoral materials are usually stored in warehouses under the watch of soldiers a [...]

Also (while I remember because today continues to be a blur) it was great to meet and chat with @haubleshannah aubry at the Mastodon stand earlier today and talking especially about the experiment they're planning when it comes to redirecting some sign ups away from Mastodon social and to other general purpose instances.

I'm really keen to be able to have Mastodonapp.uk and Universeodon become part of the experiment and ultimately help take some of the new folks coming to join Mastodon as a whole.

I am excited to see more on what the experiment and potential long term approach is going to be and I know there's a fair few questions they are thinking about when it comes to spam and ensuring this is sustainable for all instances and not just those fortunate enough to have large moderation teams 24/7.

Does anyone have knowledge of an instance that is focused on Minnesota?

I have a friend who's mounting an outsider Senate run in MN, and I'd like to find her an instance that has a strong MN presence to help move her campaign.

She's a member of DSA, trans woman, with a history in public service.

DMs are fine as responses, as well as open answers.
