What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

Packing for ๐Ÿฅณ

I have so many items of clothing promoting the Fediverse that I could change outfits multiple times a day ๐Ÿ˜‚

If anyone is interested in a forest green sweatshirt that says "the future is federated" (size small, unisex) let me know. I had it remade (comped) because v1 came out differently than my mockup.

I'll have it with me tomorrow, just ask.

See you around! I'm sooo exciteeeeeed

Top left: navy blue t-shirt that reads "united federation of the fediverse" under it a yellow t-shirt that reads "never mind the billionaires here's the fediverse". Center: a dark green sweatshirt that reads "the future is federated". Right: a blue t-shirt that reads "Mastodon& Pixelfed&" and below it a black t-shirt with "the future is federated" written in white

The Austrian Data Protection Authority ruled that the use of tracking cookies in Microsoft's 365 Education products violates data protection law.

Austria is paying Microsoft an obscene amount of money per year for the "privilege" of exposing children to digital exploitation. Microsoft, on the other side, is cashing in twice - by selling user licenses and by selling their users.

That's how techno-capitalism works. Not for us, but for someone else.

sometimes i think about unity's scene file format and what a disaster it is and what an alternative would look like. i generally prefer to have everything defined by code as that presents the fewest assumptions but sometimes i noodle around with the idea of an XML file that straightforwardly compiles into C#, a little like e.g. Vue components. i am not sure if this is a good idea or worth exploring.

<boss-scene enemies="100" difficult="true">
    <walking-enemy-spawner start-x="30" start-y="100" />
    <walking-enemy-spawner start-x="130" start-y="200" />
    <power-ups chance="0.5">
        <health max="80" />
        <speed />
    </power-ups>
</boss-scene>public static partial class Assets
{
    public static BossScene Load()
    {
        var boss_scene = new BossScene(enemies:300, difficult: true);
        boss_scene.AddChild(new WalkingEnemySpawner(start_x:30, start_y:100));
        boss_scene.AddChild(new WalkingEnemySpawner(start_x:130, start_y:200));
        var power_ups = new PowerUps(chance:0.5);
        power_ups.AddChild(new Health(max:80));
        power_ups.AddChild(new Speed());
        boss_scene.AddChild(power_ups);
        return boss_scene;
    }

I've got my paws on "Stop! Hibari-kun!!" - a queer (or, rather, trans?) rom-com manga written for normies, back from 1981. The manga is really, truly problematic in many ways. But it also shows me that despite right-wing folks crying "oh no! but the pro-LGBT agenda!" for years, LGBT folks in 2026 are still facing generally the same class of problems are LGBT folks did in 1981.

Some things got a bit better, sure, but the stuff (violently) depicted in this comedy book still happens today even in the most progressive countries.

Somewhat off-topic: Hibari is very pretty, and has a good style. I should learn a few things from her.

Also: I should read more LGBTQ stuff. Ideally LGBTQ stuff made by LGBTQ creators.

A cover of manga "Stop!! Hibari-kun!" by Hisashi Eguchi, showing a young pretty lady in a cute top and rebel-looking jeans with holes, sipping a juice from a cup through a straw; a bad-ass looking electric guitar resting on her laps and tummy.

Today, 2035-02-01 the CEOs of Amazon-X, Sir Weyland and the CEO of Apple-Tata, Mr. Yutani, announced the biggest ever fusion of corporate power and decided to call the new global conglomerate The Weyland-Yutani Corporation. Their main goal is to mine the asteroid belt to garantuee energy and rare metals to Earth, the moon and Mars. Governments all over the three worlds congratulated them and expressed their willingness to support.

ICE is disappearing people.

This is a grim and difficult piece, but it is heartening to read it one particular way: the broader national and global conversation is finally, finally starting to pick up on what so many of us have been yelling for weeks and months: the Department of Homeland Security is acting as Trumpโ€™s secret police, a group of Brownshirts with a military-sized budget whose horrors extend far beyond two murders.

:blobcatbusiness: What's the most common complaint I've heard about Linux?

Not the installation process.
Not finding a distro.
Not getting programs to work.
Not troubleshooting.
Not hardware compatibility.

The most common complaint about Linux I've seen is this:
For a normal computer user, asking for help is just about impossible.

They ask a simple question and:
People respond "Did you Google it?"
People complain that the question wasn't asked "correctly".
People respond "RTFM"
People get mad??? at them for making an easy mistake.

We can't expect normal people to know to, or even know how to deal with any of that stuff.

Search engines these days are awful, manuals are hard to read for most people (especially stuff like ArchWiki), and normal people make mistakes we think are easily avoidable.

The solution to making Linux more popular is not ruthless promotion. The solution is to actually help the people who are trying to use it. :ablobcatattention:

โ€œRemember when we said โ€˜Infrastructure as Codeโ€™? Somehow, the industry heard โ€˜Infrastructure as YAMLโ€™ and ran with it. Now we're drowning in a sea of indentation-sensitive, template-riddled, Jinja2-abused configuration files that make even the most battle-hardened sysadmins weep into their mechanical keyboards.โ€

The Trumpists will continue to escalate. But in Minneapolis, we can see the limits of MAGAโ€™s assault.

Trumpโ€™s authoritarian desires are limitless. But his ability to impose them on America is not.

I do appreciate the future proofing of gnu coreutils's "free" command having a --pebi (show output (of RAM) in pebibytes), at the current right I think that might be a little preemptive

# free --pebi
               total        used        free
Mem:               0           0           0
Swap:              0           0           0

Suppose you could probably(?) configure a PiB of Swap though...

RE: dice.camp/@artemis/11594041750

Survival is resistance.
Survival is solidarity.

Do you know how many people are devoting their time, talent, and treasure to making sure people (esp but not exclusively those *being targeted by the regime*) SURVIVE? Every one of us who keeps going is a WIN for all of us.

*We* are who will win this.
*We* have to outlast them.

Take care, my friends.
