"Countdown Begins for Artemis II Wet Dress Rehearsal" by - Dress rehearsals in show business or mean a practice run like the real thing. With rockets, "wet" means it includes filling liquid propellant tanks. If you saw "wet dress" and thought something else, you get a one-time pass because some rocketeers decades ago undoubtedly intended it that way to be funny. is a big rocket which takes many hours to fill. nasa.gov/blogs/missions/2026/0 🌕️

"Artemis II Wet Dress Rehearsal: Test Terminated at T-5:15" by - rocket launch rehearsal did not complete due to a liquid hydrogen leak. Tanks are being drained to safe the vehicle. After troubleshooting or repairs, the wet dress rehearsal will have to be done again up to the point of aborting before ignition would happen in the countdown on an actual launch attempt. No announcement yet of effects on launch scheduling. nasa.gov/blogs/missions/2026/0 🌖

I expected NotificationCenter.MainActorMessage conforming types to be post-able from anywhere and auto-isolate delivery to the main actor. Instead, I get a EXC_BREAKPOINT when this is invoked from a background queue.

If it were required to post on the main actor, the NotificationCenter.post message surely would be MainActor-isolation annotated, wouldn't it?

I wonder what goes on there.

RE: cyberplace.social/@GossiTheDog

There were lots of folks in MS when I was there who were willing to tell management that this was a mistake. They were the ones given lower bonuses and told that they needed to get behind the corporate priorities. Some of them found niches where they could work on something they found interesting without management noticing, a lot more left. The people who were promoted were the ones who either had terrible judgement or were willing to lie to management.

The board needs to hold Satya Nadella and Kevin Scott accountable for creating that environment. If not, shareholders might start asking why 20% of the company’s value was wiped out in six months.

We just dropped two super useful articles:

- Addresses look wildly different around the world (order, details, even postal codes). This one explains the chaos and how to build forms/apps that don't frustrate international users.

- Easy guide to JavaScript's built-in Intl API, with real examples for formatting dates, numbers, currencies, etc., the right way for any language/region.

Report: 400+ former EU officials urge the EU to move beyond condemnatory statements of Israel & take concrete measures, including:

* halting all military support to Israel;

* suspending the EU-Israel Association Agreement;

* refusing to join the so-called “Board of Peace".

Just finished my first sysadmin stuff. As a Unix hobbyist, I’ve always wanted to setup my own instance that runs several services. I purchased $6/month VPS instance from Vultr which provides 1c shared CPU, 1GB RAM, 25GB NVMe, and 2TB/month network bandwidth.

Services I set up:
- Web server: Let’s Encrypt SSL + Nginx + HTTP/3 in jail.
Adopted “modern” level of Mozilla SSL configuration
- Tor relay: Tor in jail
- ZNC: Let’s Encrypt SSL + ZNC in jail as a IRC bouncer
- Wireguard: if_wg

Since the instance comes with 1 ipv4 and 1 prefix 64 ipv6 range, I tried to assign only static ipv6 to each jail so they can have its own address. That didn’t work well since Tor relay and ZNC expected ipv4 address, so I switched to cloned interface (bastille0). PF rules are almost same as Bastille-generated one except that I added rules for Wireguard, ICMP, and SSH brute force protection.

I used BastilleBSD for jail setup because it is the most user-friendly jail management tool. Thanks @BastilleBSDBastilleBSD :freebsd: !

Phone hack:

Instead of trading in and upgrading every year, use the same phone for a few years with a chunky protective case, then go case-less and use for another year or two. Feels like a brand new phone, and now you've had it for so long you'll be less worried about the little scuffs it gets with use.

Never experiencing your device without a case is a real shame. I have young kids, so I need a case. But I'm mentally and financially prepared to buy a new phone anytime between now and the and of 2027. So maybe I'll need to upgrade if I have an accident, but if not, I'll certainly be enjoying the freedom of holding a naked phone for a little while.

For context:
I've been using the Pixel 7 since launch and just threw away my case. Feels good 😊

Well, after 14 years, my Write a Compiler course is having its final curtain call February 16-20. You can still get in on the action though dabeaz.com/compiler.html.

Honestly, it's hard for me to believe that taking a class like this out of a university setting would even work for as long as it did. I definitely had a blast teaching it! But, alas, all good things eventually come to an end. Time to rotate the crops.

The Delhi launch of INDIA STREET LETTERING was a special one! It was not only at the independent bookstore that I frequent most, The Bookshop Inc instagram.com/thebookshopinc/, but my parents were in attendance, as well folks I’ve worked with over the years, including Veronika @typetogether. Sure we talked about design and typography, and craft and labour, but we also laughed and chuckled, which feels like a given in any conversation with Anshika offsetprojects.in/about/.

A big thank you to everyone who attended, and made it a special evening 🌻

If you haven’t yet grabbed a copy of the book yet, you can order one directly from @blaftBlaft Publications blaft.com/products/india-stree, or check in with your local bookstore 😇
