Since DuckDuckGo has decided to regionalize all my search results even when no region is selected (why?!? 😩),

Making my work impossible (I don't spend my day writing about Canada DuckDuckGo! 🙄),

I have started to use @MojeekMojeek Search Engine and I must say that it is a real joy. I find what I'm looking for much quicker, no patronizing regionalization based on IP, and no AI pollution. It feels like I found back the 2010s web and I'm here for it.

Thank you Mojeek 💚

My favorite media "joke" is the one where fake news stories describe the US as an unstable regime led by an incompetent strongman leader.

You know, the way US media portrays any country we're not supposed to like.

Only in this case, it's mostly true.

RE: mastodon.social/@mcc/116004809

Anyway the reason I roll my eyes at most of the discussion about "AI", "AGI", "the singularity", "intelligence self-improvement feedback loop" is that like, it happened, it's already happened, it's been happening, it's us. We're it.

Kurzweil talked about lusting for a machine that can make him smarter. I have that, it's a piece of paper. I can write math on a piece of paper and solve problems I can't solve in my head. I can upload all the information in the world directly into my brain (books).

I was planning on visiting Ferrara once again - maybe an early spring, maybe a late March or so. But...

1. I need to lose some weight - Ferrara is a place where kilos are gained very, very easily - colazione in Caffe Italiano, pre-lunch desert at Pasticceria Carli, pizza in Mordi e Fuggi, an ice cream, then a dinner and a few beers at the XI Comandamento. So I need to be prepared.

2. it needs to be a home match of S.P.A.L.... ehm, I mean, Ars et Labor Ferrara Calcio.. which is usually played on Sunday so it's not possible for me to just use my days off during the "short week"

3. And I also need to be there during the weekday because I want to visit the coffee roasters Krifi Caffe..

So as you can see, it's not as easy as it seems.. not as easy..

Stavo pensando di tornare a Ferrara—magari in primavera presto, tipo fine marzo. Però...

My highlight of Fosdem26 was our panel ‘The Fediverse and the EU Digital Services Act: Solutions to the Challenges of Modern Social Media?' ✨

Thanks for giving me the possibility to speak about our @offene_netzwerke demands.

A huge thank you @jmarisJordan Maris 🇪🇺 🇺🇦 #NAFO for organising the panel & his excellent moderation. 👏

Thanks @alexandrageese member of the 🇪🇺 parliament, who took the time to join us & the FOSS community for this important debate over the weekend.

Education Committee meeting today. The genAI madness is in full swing, at least in my neck of the higher-education woods.

Example: MSc dissertations. A three-months project of supervised applied research. Students now are encouraged to use LLM tools to develop and design their project. It used to be the role of the supervisor to help the student develop their project and learn how to do things themselves, in a series of personal meetings, human teacher and human student in creative dialogue, a precious culmination of a Master's degree. Under the new rules, as supervisor I won't even be allowed to insist that the student works with me, without AI.

Since you ask: yes, I did speak up against it. A few other colleagues did so too. Most were pro-AI, feeling hip.

The world we live in! A once noble profession giving up on its own core role, mindlessly. Self-mutilation of the university teacher as a profession.

So many developers have sent me that Anthropic skills/mastery case study that I realized I should ungate what I *already wrote* about this whole topic back in October: beginning principles to design workflows that work *with* your mind, not against it, & protect your problem-solving

We use a lot of simple analogies for learning that are subtly misleading. Like reducing all of complex behavior down to simplistic "dopamine loops", it's inaccurate. Good learning is not really about whether things are "always hard" or "always easy," it's about whether we're being strategic overall
