New in PN: Lower courts can't fix what's broken in Minnesota

"Judge Menendez’s decision isn’t a failure of will. It’s a result of a world where conservatives on the nation’s highest court have decided their job is to help President Trump achieve a desired result, law and procedure be damned." publicnotice.co/p/judge-menend

Democracy? What Democracy? It's all about the old mighty cold dollar... ->

"When the World Wide Web went live in the early 1990s, its founders hoped it would be a space for anyone to share information and collaborate. But today, the free and open web is shrinking.

The Internet Archive has been recording the history of the internet and making it available to the public through its Wayback Machine since 1996. Now, some of the world’s biggest news outlets are blocking the archive’s access to their pages.

Major publishers – including The Guardian, The New York Times, the Financial Times, and USA Today – have confirmed they’re ending the Internet Archive’s access to their content.

While publishers say they support the archive’s preservation mission, they argue unrestricted access creates unintended consequences, exposing journalism to AI crawlers and members of the public trying to skirt their paywalls.

Yet, publishers don’t simply want to lock out AI crawlers. Rather, they want to sell their content to data-hungry tech companies. Their back catalogues of news, books and other media have become a hot commodity as data to train AI systems.

2026-02-05 18:40 www.yna.co.kr/view/AKR2026...

Someone at reached out to me about a organization that takes care of the logistics of hosting conferences? I.e. venue, ticketing and catering. And it was free for open source projects.

I remember Munich, London and Paris(?) as possible locations?

Sounded great. Forgot their name. Does anyone know?

Boost appreciated!

Do any moots know someone who we might be able to consult about restructuring a mid-size FOSS project? Essentially to migrate from a BDFL model to a more flat-structured democratic organisation.

We are discussing how to restructure so that it can continue to scale up and be a truly community-run project.

We have some idea of how co-ops like Igalia do this, but we have a lot of differences (like being largely volunteer run and having very different goals) which leave us with a lot of unknowns.

To give an example of the kind of structure we're thinking of (by no means final, there hasn't been any broad agreement on a new structure yet):

We have the relevant pieces in place to form an assembly (everyone listed on postmarketos.org/team/ ) which could then democratically form teams and delegate responsibilities to them (e.g. finance/budget, technical policy-making, maintainers for various OS components).

The assembly would then also be responsible for deciding on focus areas and long term goals for the project (e.g. improving reliability, building a production-ready immutable version of the distro)

We could then form working groups to enable cross-team collaboration to move towards our specific goals.

Currently we lack a lot of understanding of the potential implications of something like this, how we can ensure the project doesn't get hijacked, that we don't drift too far from our mission statement, etc etc...

If you have a background in sociology and/or relevant experience from other projects then I would love to reach out and be able to discuss this in more detail!

This morning as I do a little knitting, Im thinking of the IKEA effect.

The IKEA effect is that people are far more attached to things they make themselves than they are objects they pay for.

As I stare into this weird, beautiful knitting with many flaws, I know it’s true.

You've probably noticed a bit less activity on our feed over the past couple of weeks.

Given the state of things in the US, it's been more difficult to focus time on social media and software development.

I've been trying to focus on mental health, exercise and other efforts to avoid being overwhelmed by the existential dread of it all.

Hopefully we'll get to the other side of this, but I expect it to get worse before it gets better.

tic-tac-toe, but its realtime rather than turn-based. to make it fun, we have to make the grid huge. either drastically increase the number of grid squares, or make each square very large, perhaps several meters across, and are drawn on with a paint roller, or perhaps road line marking equipment
