What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

So I did a comedic trip on a pavement to launch my phone some distance and so need a new phone. Last time I checked the pixel 5 was still my preferred choice, its small, light, plastic back (less glass to crack), stock android and cheap. Anything better?

I just signed up for the "Un-Workshop" coming up in March. Who else is planning to sign in?

"Growing the Open Social Web" was already on my bingo card for 2026. I have my own ideas, but I'm more excited to hear what others have to say.

If we blame misinformation on social media for the trouble in our democracies, then growing the (responsibly) may be our best path forward.

Been running through the FreeBSD installer multiple times for debugging and testing the OpenZFS book, and realized:

much of the learning curve could be eliminated by adding two options in the disk setup menu: "Single Disk ZFS" and "Single Disk UFS." Select one of those, and the most confusing part goes away.

When using ZFS as the file system the "df" command is reporting the pool size
and not file system sizes. It also does not know about descendent ZFS
datasets, snapshots, quotas, and reservations with their individual space usage.
Use the built-in "zfs list" command to get a better overview of space usage:

zfs list -o space

RE: mastodon.social/@QasimRashid/1

YET MILLIONS OF “WHITES” COULD NOT VOTE

in New York, if you didn't have an English sounding name EVEN IF YOU WERE A CITIZEN LIKE PUERTO RICANS, you had to take a test to vote.

the 1975 ammendment to the Voting Rights Act (Section 4e) banned linguistic discrimination, giving millions of migrants, including Europeans, the right to vote in their language.

it’s why section 4(e) is called THE 🇵🇷 PUERTO RICAN AMENDMENT. we shut that shit down after 80 years of lawsuits.

It is hard to see more people saying that they are being harassed, or otherwise don't feel safe, in the fediverse.

I am *not* on the receiving end of abuse here, which makes it even harder to see others having such a rubbish experience.

Especially because of what I suspect to be the reasons for such a different experience.

> Spend some real time speaking to the estimated 4.5 million white people who still live in South Africa—a number that has remained steady since the late 1980s—and most will tell you that they are better off now than they were under the white regime that was purportedly designed to protect them. Violent crime has fallen by nearly half since its peak in 1993. The rule of law largely operates, elections are free and fair, and white politicians hold major cabinet ministries

I'm taking a break from using Mastodon. The experience here has been less-than-great the past few weeks, and I am tired of this cycle repeating.

In an effort to stay in touch, I've launched a newsletter at veronicaexplains.net. Future blog posts will go there as well.

I explain more in the inaugural post: veronicaexplains.net/launching

I have also turned on ActivityPub for this blog, you can follow it at @veronicaVeronica Explains (via Ghost).

@vkcvkc (Veronica Explains) @veronicaVeronica Explains (via Ghost) I hate that this has/is/will happen(ed/ing) to you. I feel like this is a larger problem that we as a species will need to tackle.

I feel like social media is antithetical to the development (so far) of the human brains of many. I am not smart enough to fix it or even really understand it.

My theory is in no way trying to diminish your suffering, but to point our that you have done nothing wrong, and the people being rude to you are defective and/or deficient.

Probably weird question.

What is the easiest way to make a blog. I don't want any complicated framework, dealing with SEO (I don't care if anyone will read it), analytics... Just something that is like Libre Office for website that can create the file structure, theme the site and stuff like that.

Yes I know that I can just use some CMS download theme and stuff it with my text, I know that I can save files as HTML in Libre Office, I know that there are some online solutions that also offers hosting and other services.

Just something that will be local, spits out HTML file that I can maybe deploy somewhere through FTP if I will be satisfied with it and I don't have to touch text editor or only for small adjustments.

Is there something like that?

Kicking myself for a lost pun opportunity today. I was reviewing a PR relating to metrics and counters where I suggested an alternate approach, but I didn't say something like "my counter proposal is..."

Next time, I'll be ready!

Introducing Claude Opus 4.6. Our smartest model got an upgrade.

Opus 4.6 plans more carefully, sustains agentic tasks for longer, operates reliably in massive codebases, and catches its own mistakes.

It’s also our first Opus-class model with 1M token context in beta.

"If I could walk five hundred miles,
and I could walk five hundred more,
Do you believe," the Walrus said
"I'd fall down at your door?"
"I doubt it", said the carpenter
And howled a bitter roar
