What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

Something I came to realize years ago when I got to know some of the people working at Twitter, there are still good, principled people working at (at least some of) the Big Tech companies who still believe in the original stated ideals, and pushing for them from within.

Worker solidarity! ✊

About 5 AM local time, up since maybe 3:30 AM waiting for the pup's bowels to do their thing so I can get a few more hours of contiguous sleep.

Researching vehicles, because I will need something to commute in this summer when my kid comes home from uni. After much research, considering a beater Honda Civic or something equally without charm.

I mean, maybe a '78 Civic would be fun, but not likely.

Despite the ties to the evil empire, if the Slate truck were available I'd probably stand in line. Maybe summer of '27 if we're all still here and employed.

The magic of the @webintents is powered by fedidb.com and our rich CommunityDB dataset*.

Imagine pressing the Follow button and being shown a list of supported apps that take you directly to the profile, without having to even enter your server!

Or, being able to onboard folks onto the fedi by simply tapping on the Follow button and finding the best platform for them.

It's a big deal, and will solve many complaints regarding fediverse UI/UX.

@benpateBen Pate 🤘🏻 is the genius behind this ❤️

RE: hachyderm.io/@littledan/116002

Came across this post about how the ETSI (European Telecommunications Standards Institute) are developing standards that Web Browsers should (must?) follow in the EU and looking at this line in the document:

`Browsers should follow applicable industry standards including but not limited to:
Web standards: W3C® recommendations (HTML, CSS, JavaScript/ECMAScript, DOM, Fetch, etc.)`

ActivityPub is now a `W3C Recommendation`... maybe something interesting we could do here.

Some say other protocols have bigger budgets and are better at marketing.

I say: the Fediverse - by the people, for the people - has passionate advocates who use their talents to promote it, often without any financial incentives. It comes from the heart.

Before FOSDEM I asked my friend @sturmsuchtChris 🦑 - a super talented photographer - if he'd consider bringing his professional camera to take photos of speakers in the Social Web devroom. He did... and so did I.

A mini (pictorial) thread 📸

a photo of Maho Pacheco - a man with dark hair, a beard and glasses - standing behind the stage at FOSDEM, looking at a computer screen, smiling and with his left arm stretched out

Sanatorium Medea. An abandoned Soviet-era health resort in western Georgia.

Sanatorium Medea, originally Sanatorium Tsekavshiri, stands on the outskirts of Tskaltubo. Built between 1957 and 1962 in the Stalinist Empire style, it opened in the early 1960s as one of the town’s most prestigious health resorts. Its blue-toned columns and arched façade marked it out as the most monumental spa complex in the district.

¹sondern Mehrheitsdiktatur

@dansup @evanEvan Prodromou I just read the website, this is awesome! Another thing I think would be cool, is if we were somehow able to bring back the concept of +1s like what Google did years ago, but make it work in the fediverse, where people can basically have a space for discovering good quality content on the web, and give it a +1 in the fediverse. I think Web Intents could work for that, then people could use the Web Intents thing to also add a recommend thing.
