Not hardly. Italian voters voted for her while she was in house arrest in Hungary, and EU law says that people elected to the EU parliament have immunity unless it has been specifically revoked. So they had to release her. Orban has repeatedly tried to get Ilaria's immunity revoked, but so far he's got no traction.

Oh, Ilaria has definitely not been silent about this. She's also an extremely courageous person who, in the EU Parliament, has been quite outspoken about this right to Orban's face. The problem, as I understand it, is that Maja was tried under Hungarian criminal law, which the EU doesn't have much say in. It seems that what really needs to happen (and the statement from the support committee gets at this) is that other EU states, and above all Germany, need to step up and start negotiating for, at the very least, Maja's transfer to house arrest, transfer back to Germany, and ultimately release. As an Italian representative to the EU Parliament, I don't think Ilaria has a whole lot of say in any of that.
Someone correct me if I've got some of the details wrong here -- EU law is hardly my strong suit -- but that's pretty much the gist, as I understand it.

In their account, American sense of political conflict has come to feel like a fight between us and them based on where people live, and this rural - urban sorting now cuts across essentially every region and state.
Interesting! 🤔 Who could have possibly seen that coming? Maybe we could form a committee, have a lot of meetings, write a whitepaper or two, get some real solid podcasts going (everyone must know what Ezra Klein's opinion is on this), and get the think tanks to think even more hardererer?
