we have a phrase in the labor movement: "don't panic, organize"

if we apply it, it works every time

it quells existential dread, builds solidarity, and makes things better for the working class

remember, "rebellions are built on hope"

don't let THE MAN get u down

we can do amazing things if we bring our care, joy, kindness, and equanimity to the fore

Each time a new privacy-invasive
feature like facial scanning is implemented, if people in majority comply and accept to use it, it will soon become normality, and other options will be marginalized or even removed entirely.

If each time a new privacy-invasive
feature is implemented people opted to refuse it, it would soon be discontinued.

Each individual opposition to privacy-invasive features matters.

It is an act of self-protection but,
perhaps even more importantly,
it is also an act of protest.

A protest against the normalization of mass surveillance and the loss of privacy rights.

The fact that there are other cameras around doesn't mean that more cameras or additional scanning is not making things even worse.

If we do not refuse,
if we do not fight for our privacy rights,
we will lose them all.

It is also our democratic duty to protect those who can't fight for themselves, who are in a minority and as such in an inferior position to defend themselves against attacks aiming at their human rights or personal privacy.

It's a duty of the majority to protect minorities - because, in a democracy, majorities change...

Telling people to "just use Linux" hasn't broken the OS duopoly. It doesn't matter that I get better fps gaming on Linux, or that I don't get ads baked into the OS itself.

Telling people to "just use Signal" hasn't broken Facebook's chokehold on messaging. It doesn't matter that using Signal is *exactly* as difficult as using WhatsApp, for fuck's sake, WhatsApp uses Signal libraries internally!

Many people actively prefer the corporate tech they see in as, that aligns with corporate power.

💯!!!

I recently tried to check in for an international flight online. It asked for a picture of my passport, with a disclaimer [paraphrasing] that my passport info would be sent to a third party for processing.

That's a hard pass for me. I'd rather wait in line at the airport then have some third party I don't know about have access to my passport info

First, they'll ask for your official IDs to confirm your age and identity.

This will create a large treasure trove
of sensitive data, which will attract criminals, and will inevitably leak from either negligence or malice, sooner than later.

Then, they'll claim your official ID is
unreliable, because it was stolen so many times, and demand you share your biometric data.

They will collect your face scan,
your palm scan, and even your iris scan (no exaggeration, these are all already being collected by some companies for identification). They will claim it's super safe.

This will create a large treasure trove
of sensitive biometric data, which will attract criminals, and will inevitably leak from either negligence or malice, sooner than later.

Then what? Rinse and escalate.

You will have lost control of not just your corporate social media accounts by participating to this, but to any data capable of validating your identity, to your privacy rights, to the protections you could use online to stay safe.

We don't have to wait that it escalates.

We can, and must, push back and say No now. Start to say No now.
