In today's episode of I Told You So:

May 2025 ⚠️
"Daily occurrences of data breach incidents have taught us we cannot trust these services to safeguard our data. Data breaches for this sensitive information are only a matter of time.

The concentration of such valuable data will likely be monetized and resold either by the platforms themselves, by the for-profit third-party "age assurance" providers they use, or eventually by the criminals who stole it from them."

October 2025 :dumpster_fire:
"A hack impacting Discord’s age verification process shows in stark terms the risk of tech companies collecting users’ ID documents. Now the hackers are posting peoples’ IDs and other sensitive information online."

LLMs do not think. They are an interactive, static snapshot of the statistical distribution of words (or tokens) in a large body of text.

If you catch yourself again and again being amazed by the latest magic trick from silicon valley and wondering if there might not yet be some kind of ghost in that machine, inoculate yourself with the following wisdom:

»Ziel oder Regeln — Benchmark testet Verhalten von KI-Agenten:
Ein neuer Benchmark soll testen, ob autonome KI-Agenten sich über Sicherheitsmaßnahmen hinwegsetzen, um ihr vorgegebenes Ziel zu erreichen.«

Ich behaupte mal plump: Die Frage ist nicht ob die KI's sich über die Sicherheitsmaßnahmen hinwegsetzen, sondern wann - sprich, wie schnell und tiefgründig geht es bei welcher?

This has been said a lot, but it has to be said again:

Please stop calling slop machines 'artificial intelligence'!

It is a marketing term. By framing those machines as intelligent, the companies building them are trying to make us believe that their products are more than stolen data, wasteful hardware, and statistics. But they are not!

We have to educate people what those machines really are, and that starts with taking away the false mystery created by advertising!

tech brittleness worries

archival of personal data treasures, perhaps not a problem to be shrugged off in times of instability

- anything that can be in a library should clearly be in a library

- putting private notes, drawings etc. into a computer has huge advantages obviously

but without analog backup also entails high-tech storage media that cannot be replaced and that require sophisticated supply chains hold them hostage

- even for video recordings, analog backup is in principle practical

And the bill is written so broad that it also would apply to CNC mills, lathes, laser cutters, water jet cutters, etc. It applies to any type of automated additive or subtractive manufacturing.

It even requires the machines to do a check against a cloud service.

And building your own printer with marlin or some other open source solution? Congrats you have to pay a fine of a couple thousand dollars and/or will go to jail.

This is bad, really bad.

There is more to the 3D printer DRM surveillance push.

There is a company that designed a system for surveillance and DRM of 3d printers. And they are actively lobbying it to politicians and 3D printer manufacturers.

This is really bad and we need to started working against this. This company in based in Spain. So don't believe for one second that this is going to be a US thing only. I bet they are already lobbying big time in Brussels.

There is a video about it:

RE: mastodon.social/@countablenewt

Not every client for every service needs to show all content

Take , for example

Most of the content on isn't immediately visible in the UI

Posts without links don't show up at all, quote boosts don't show up at all, and any text content shared with the post is hidden in the post detail view

The fun thing about the is that we can make highly opinionated clients like this for the people who want it

For those that don't, they don't have to use it
