@evanEvan Prodromou okay so you are asking about when one should deem a project "unmaintained".

Depends entirely on the project.

Also while you are centering project volunteers, the judgment is one that necessarily must be made by downstream users, not by the alleged maintainers.

(Though it's fine and helpful to say "hey this project is now unmaintained, just FYI".)

Text classification with Python 3.14's zstd module • Max Halford

Python 3.14 introduced the compression.zstd module. It is a standard library implementation of Facebook’s Zstandard (Zstd) compression algorithm. It was developed a decade ago by Yann Collet, who holds a blog devoted to compression algorithms. I am not a compression expert, but Zstd caught my eye because it supports incremental compression. You can feed it data to compress in chunks, and it will maintain an internal state. It’s particularly well suited for compressing small data. It’s perfect for the classify text via compression trick, which I described in a previous blog post 5 years ago.

漫画描くときは、まずターゲットの設定が要るんです。
ターゲットが幼稚園児を含むなら複雑なコマ割りや難しい慣用句を使っちゃいけないし、1コマに同じキャラを複数描いて時間経過を表すキュビズム表現は使っちゃいけないし。ターゲットが一般誌に飽き足らず同人に手を出すような読解力オバケなら「どうだ、これ読めるか！？​:oraoraoraora:​​:blobcat_mudamudamuda:​」くらいのチャレンジブルな表現をしてもいい​:blobcat_drawing:​

So that's a completely different question.

If you're *applying* to be a volunteer maintainer *on an existing project you do not own*, then obviously, there will be expectations set by the existing community, which will be different for every single project.

For reference: I write primarily OSS software, but I do it professionally. So, naturally, my employer sets the expectations for my contribution.
