What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

RE: mastodon.social/@tusk81/116059

"'This decision wouldn’t have happened without several weeks of protest and collective action by low-wage workers with Missouri Workers Center and over 20 local immigrant and racial justice, faith, school, environmental, and civil rights groups,' Terrence Wise said in the statement. 'We will continue fighting to keep masked, unaccountable federal agents out of our communities and for the dignity, respect, and pathway to better citizenship that we all deserve.'"

This is the best part about hosting snac2:
One other feature I like is that by default, SNAC does NOT download all external media. That means the only media you’ll be storing is the media YOU post. This is unlike most fediverse platforms which require a ton of local storage or an S3 bucket

Today we had a fire alarm in the office. A colleague wrote to a Slack channel 'Fire alarm in the office building', to start a thread if somebody knows any details. We have AI assistant Glean integrated into the Slack, and it answered privately to her: "today's siren is just a scheduled test and you do not need to leave your workplace". It was not a test or a drill, it was a real fire alarm. Someday, AI will kill us.

Image of fire brigade near our officeGlean answer:

In building ... today’s siren is just a scheduled test and you do not need to leave
your workplace while it's running.

If you're unsure or something seems off (e.g. smoke, smell, people evacuating), call Munich building emergency number ... or ask at reception immediately.

Today I learned that you can use remind(1) in your shebang line:

$ cat test.rem # set the path to remind(1) accordingly
#!/usr/local/bin/remind
REM Feb 12 2026 MSG Today I learned you can use remind shebangs

$ chmod +x test.rem

$ ./test.rem

PyPI does not exist to be your personal or commercial software distribution platform, especially if you intentionally obfuscate your code.

The @osiOpen Source Initiative :osi: definition includes:

An den Baustellenampeln hier hängt ein Schild mit der Aufschrift "Fußgänger bitte drücken"

Ich bin noch nicht ein einziges Mal gedrückt worden. Und wenn man versucht andere Menschen zu drücken, sind die ganz pikiert. Die meinen das Schild bezieht sich auf den Bettelknopf. Völlig verrückte Ansicht!1elf!!

Dear FOSS maintainers,

here’s a list of funding programs currently accepting proposals for maintenance work:

Codeberg: codeberg.org/mechko/awesome-ma

GitHub: github.com/mechko/awesome-main

Thanks to everyone who helped crowdsource it! I’ll keep it updated, issues and PRs are very welcome :)

mirrors.kernel.org is down because it threw 2 disks in a RAID-6 array and then ground itself to a halt. I'm trying to resuscitate it. Please use mirrors.edge.kernel.org (it's pointing at our only remaining server that is now up, in Amsterdam).

We need more redundancy for these systems. After exiting Equinix, we are reduced to just 2 nodes (and hence, we're now down to 1 until I rebuild the RAID array on the one that's currently offline).

If you can donate us a server with at least 70TB of space and lots of bandwidth, I'd like to hear from you, but it has to come with hosting, as we don't have any physical datacentres any more and must rely on the kindness of strangers to host them.

Don't anthropomorphize LLMs, language is important. Say "the bot generated some text" not "the AI replied". Use "this document contains machine-generated text" not "this work is AI-assisted". See how people squirm when you call out their slop this way.

Given the epic level of self-sabotage the powerful routinely display, it's plain that to the extent they succeed, in many cases they do so in spite of themselves, not because of any supposed merits they may have.

RE: sfba.social/@MoffettHangar1/11

In response to the damage (on this day in 1935), Commander Wiley ordered fuel to be dropped, causing the airship to rapidly rise. The Macon's automatic valves released Helium at her 5000 ft ceiling, and she settled into the stormy surf off Pt. Sur. She is still there.
