After yesterday, I'm more convinced than ever that the "T" in TOML is an example of *current* governance issues, not only an unchallenged and unfortunate historical artifact. Given that, I want the fork of TOML that I opened a couple days ago to work.

In part, that's very selfish of me.

Arcalibre needs a config file format that meets some very specific requirements. While there's better formats than TOML, like KDL, TOML is the best fit out there for those **specific** requirements.

Nuclear Bodies: The Global Hibakusha
by Robert A. Jacobs
Yale University Press (2022)

In the fall of 1961, President Kennedy somberly warned Americans about deadly radioactive fallout clouds extending hundreds of miles from Hโ€‘bomb detonations, yet he approved ninetyโ€‘six US nuclear weapon tests for 1962. Cold War nuclear testing, production, and disasters like and have exposed millions to dangerous particles; these millions are the global .

Many communities continue to be plagued with dire legacies and ongoing risks: sickness and early mortality, forced displacement, uncertainty and anxiety, dislocation from ancestors and traditional lifestyles, and contamination of food sources and ecosystems. Nuclear Bodies weaves these seemingly distinct legacies into a comprehensive global history, examining the colonialism(s) with which nuclear weapon states "select the irradiated," the political use of medical models to render their harm invisible, and the millennia-long legacies of our embrace of nuclear technologies.

Global hibakusha

Who are the โ€œglobal hibakushaโ€? As many of us know, hibakusha is the Japanese word used to refer to those who survived the two nuclear attacks conducted by the United States against the people living in Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945. Those attacks killed between 100,000 and 200,000 human beings instantly, and wounded as many.

apjjf.org/2022/7/Jacobs

Hundreds of thousands of survivors were exposed to radiation from the attacks. In the face of this horror, we calm ourselves with the reassuring thought that nuclear weapons have not been used since 1945. However, there have been over 2,000 nuclear weapon detonations since then, and because of the size of the weapons and the scale of their effects, millions of people have been exposed to radiation under their fallout clouds, even as the detonations are called โ€œtests.โ€ Millions more have been exposed from nuclear production and nuclear accidents. These millions are the global hibakusha.

ยซ In A.D. 1582 Pope Gregory XIII found that the existing Julian calendar insufficiently represented reality, and changed the rules about calculating leap years to account for this. Similarly, in A.D. 2013 Rockchip hardware engineers found that the new Gregorian calendar still contained flaws, and that the month of November should be counted up to 31 days instead. ยป

This cesium-137 continues to show up in food products throughout Europe every year, especially jams, mushrooms and wild boar (who eat the mushrooms). While we think of Chernobyl as a disaster that occurred in the past, it continues to present risk to people living far from the site who were not yet born. The triple meltdowns at Fukushima spread radioactive clouds throughout the region, with the primary deposition of fallout being to the northwest of the plants.

There too, cesium-137 continues to spread through the ecosystem. As a chemical, cesium-137 is very adept at migrating in nature. It easily passes from air to soil to water to plants to biota. It remains radioactively dangerous for about 300 years, meaning that once it has deposited and embedded into an ecosystem, centuries of risk will follow.

To celebrate my first merged PR into Firefox core, I wrote a too-long article on Contextual Design for (Opinionated) Component Libraries.

And it concludes with my reasons for submitting patches to Firefox and WebKit.

Lots of thanks to everyone who helped out, or wrote articles, or encouraged me to just do it. @argyleinkAdam Argyle , @kizuRoma Komarov ,@emilioEmilio Cobos รlvarez , Keith, and @jaffathecakeJake Archibald โค๏ธ

This unforgettable primate, found in the mangrove forests of Borneo, is the proboscis monkey (Nasalis larvatus)! Also known as the long-nosed monkey, males of this species sport a distinctive drooping proboscis, which acts like a resonating chamber to amplify their vocalizations. Scientists think itโ€™s a sexually selected traitโ€”meaning that females prefer louder (and bigger-nosed) mates.
