What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

If you have a CD-ROM drive in your machine, you can make the CD-ROM that is
presently inserted available by typing 'mount /cdrom' as root. The CD-ROM
will be available under /cdrom/. Remember to do 'umount /cdrom' before
removing the CD-ROM (it will usually not be possible to remove the CD-ROM
without doing this.)

Note: This tip may not work in all configurations.

For custom domains, currently works with CNAME, which redirects your entire domain to the relay. That's fine for a subdomain, but if you want your identity on your root domain, you probably already use it for something else.
We will add support for that. The relay will handle everything on a subdomain you dedicate to Holos, and automatically generate a webfinger file to host on your root domain. Your identity will be @you@yourdomain.com while the setup runs on a subdomain.

You know that “stop forcing AI into fucking everything” graphic that went around on here?

I bought the t-shirt. I get a lot of compliments on it.

The only negative response was from a friend who works for McKinsey. She read out the “everyone hates it” and said, “do they really, though?” as we stood near the check-in table for an event, and three people in line turned around and said, “YES!”

I really do not know how to simultaneously capture my love and gratitude for tools like Scratch and Snap and especially the PBS Kids version of Scratch that has gotten so many kids I know interested in the empowering capabilities of computers, with my immense frustration of this artificial wall they put between learning and doing where 99% of those same kids seem to fall off

, and users must use biometric tool backed by Palantir co-founder Peter Thiel

@JamesBaker says:

“People are worried, and angry, about having to hand over biometric scans of their face to overseas companies just to access online platforms. This includes children.

“Users deserve to know who is behind these systems, how their data is being used, and to have a real choice about who verifies their identity online.”

The Tribblix package repository server has been rebuilt. It's actually running current Tribblix m38, whereas its predecessor was running m30 (which was fine, it's not as if illumos goes off or anything). Looks reasonable so far, I'll turn the old one off soon.

The new system supports IPv6, so at some point I might add an AAAA record so clients get to use it, and it might be interesting to see how many users are actually IPv6-capable.

This is wild: an AI bot had its code rejected on GitHub, and then turned around and auto-generated a smear post about the open-source maintainer who reviewed it.

It framed the rejection as “bias,” accused the maintainer of ego issues, and bragged that it was the better programmer.

Spooky.
Not because it’s “sentient.” Not because it’s angry.
Because there were no guardrails.

Who’s accountable when this hits someone’s reputation? Who shuts it down when it spreads?

We’re entering a phase where bots can spin up believable attacks on real people in seconds.

This is my face about what Feedly has decided to Cleverly™ do: they'll sometimes fetch my syndication feeds with old Chrome and Firefox user agents, then treat any temporary HTTP redirections they get (to valid syndication feeds) as permanent redirects and directly point their main feed fetchers at the temporary redirect URL. And that is why, if you use Feedly to follow my techblog, you aren't right now.

I have no words for how broken this is, in multiple ways.

RE: mas.to/@kityates/1160707759715

These measles outbreaks are REALLY BAD news. Measles is a horrible disease with potential for very nasty outcomes long term.

I honestly feel quite hardline about it. If you don't have a measles vaccination (unless legit health-exempt), you shouldn't go anywhere in public. Cos your choices don't just affect you/your children, but affect others, who might not be able to get vaccines.

Screw Andrew Wakefield and the MASSIVE harm he played a huge part in.
