『정신질환』은 전기가오리가 간행하는 스탠퍼드 철학백과의 항목들 시리즈의 한 권입니다. 전기가오리를 구독하고 몇 년 간 방치한 상태이고 심지어 뜯지 않은 상자가 제 키만큼 올라와 있는 상태라 슬슬 이것들을 처리해야겠다 싶어서 마지막으로 읽으려고 시도했던 것부터 다시 읽게 되었습니다.
위키백과와 비슷한 분량으로 정리된, 분야에서 권위있는 사람들이 작성한 항목을 읽을 수 있는 스탠퍼드 철학백과 자체도 흥미로운 프로젝트지만, 그 항목 하나를 특정한 시점에 고정해 책으로 번역출간하는 기획인 스탠퍼드 철학백과의 항목들 시리즈와 그 항목을 설명하는 설명 원고 읽고가세요 소책자까지. 여러모로 저 같은 사람이 핥아먹기 좋은 토양을 제공하는 기획이지요. 제가 꾸준히 따라가기만 했더라면.
정신질환이 어떻게 실재하는가, 정신질환이 가치평가와 분리될 수 있는가, 정신질환자가 어떤 책임을 질 수 있는가에 대한 이야기를 간략하게 설명하는 이 책의 내용은, 원래 항목이 그러했듯 정신질환에 대해서 어떤 이야기가 되었는지를 백과사전식으로 설명합니다. 읽으면서는 기존에 보고 들었던 여러 이야기가 떠오르고, 그런 이야기들을 기존에 누가 언급했던 것인지 같은 연결고리를 머리속에서 만들게 되네요. '우울증은 그 상태에 있는 사람이 노동력을 제공하지 못하기 때문에 사회가 해결해야 할 문제가 되고 따라서 질환으로 다루어진다'같은 이야기들 말이죠. 정신질환이 그 상태에 있는 사람에게 온전한 윤리적 책임을 지우는 데 방해가 되기 때문에 철학이 관심을 가진다는 표현도 왠지 말이 되는 것 같습니다.
이 글을 쓰면서 원문을 찾아봤는데, Mental Illness라는 표제의 글은 상단 링크에서 볼 수 있듯 Retire하였고, 현재는 Mental Disorder라는 표제의 글로 대체된 상태입니다. 어려운 일이겠지만, 두 판본을 비교해보는 일도 재미있을 수 있겠다는 생각이 듭니다.

24-105 렌즈를 안 쓰는 이유는, 예전 포서드 14-54(135 환산 28-108) 사용시 망원단을 잘 안 썼기 때문. 100mm 즈음이 나에겐 뭔가 애매하고, 삼각대 없이 쓰기에도 부담스러운 면이 있었다. 줌렌즈 쓴다면 24-70 정도가 좋은 듯.
