AI Must Die!

Critical Perspectives on the State of Artificial Intelligence

AI MUST DIE is a short zine by Myke Walton and Cam Smith that presents critical perspectives on the way that AI is talked about, governed, and owned in 2025.

AI is fucking everywhere: at work, at school, in our homes, in our phones, on our streets, in our governments, and at war. We are living through an era of extreme AI hype. In this climate, some people have gotten rich off of the stolen data and stolen labor that fuels these technologies. Others have been surveilled, oppressed, exploited, and killed. This text presents a short, practical guide to the technologies currently called “AI,” the ideologies and actors pouring gasoline on the AI dumpsterfire, and what we can do about it.

...

How long will this go on? When will the hype cycle end? Is another AI winter coming? Faced with an inhumane tech industry and complicit governments it may ultimately fall to the people to invent new ways to evade, refuse, resist, sabotage or otherwise destroy AI.

Hammers up! AI Must Die!

Seize the means of computation

Read the full zine here: https://www.aimustdie.info/

The image is a zine cover with a photograph and text. The title of the book is “AI MUST DIE” in large, bold, black letters on a white background. Below the title is the subtitle “Critical Perspectives on the State of Artificial Intelligence” in smaller, black font.

The photograph depicts a white cone-shaped security robot in a pool of water being recovered by two secuirty officers in blue shirts while a woman in a black dress observes.

At the bottom of the cover is text reading “Incident 68: Security Robot Drowns Itself in a Fountain” followed by “AI Incident Database (AIID)” and the URL “incidentdatabase.ai”.

I don't think people here realized yet how much development has sped up in the "atmosphere*"

I fear for the future of the fediverse if we don't get our shit together in some key areas. The way the lexicon system over there allows interoperability between distinct types of data and interface is really showing now that the developer ecosystem is picking up.

*The network comprised of different stuff that uses AT Proto

The separation between PDS and appview is a great advantage. I guess ActivityPods's is trying to do something similar by unify Solis and AP, but I don't see much talk about it.

ATProto also has something alike Zot's "nomadic identity". And while there has been work to get it working on ActivityPub, only a few software support it and many don't even care about implementing it.

A big problem of the AP side of fedi is that while seeing itself as the most decentralised in quantitative terms, in some qualitative aspect acts in a semi-centralised manner either by making migration harder and incomplete or by being suspicious of any tool that separates identity from log in credential (nomadic identity, multiple identities, etc). It's pretty obvious that many AP devs and sysadmins have a user lock-in mentally and only defend the self-hosting aspect of decentralisation.

How far did that go? I know that GoToSocial was contacted, but I have not heard anything from Sharkey, upstream Misskey, nor Akkoma or Pleroma, and we of course heard of what's happening but AFAIK haven't been contacted either.

Though, mind you, I was moreso talking about how I believe the SWF should be the coordinator here, as they are the foundation that is supposed to consolidate and coordinate work in the space, after all. Not so much Mastodon gGmbH themselves. Sorry if that wasn't quite clear in the post

In another toot I mentioned all those many projects that have been supported by @nlnet over time. I counted 86 R&D initiatives, but there are likely more.
