What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

Well put: “To conclude this wrapup of my experience in 2025: more than ever, I still regard the open web as my online home. There are communities I feel like I belong to within it — like the 'open social' community, the Mastodon community, the Eleventy community, etc. Maybe there will eventually be a Cybercultural community! If you're a swiss resident ( or know one ... ) you can get a custom hardware design onto an ASIC for FREE !!!

You get back one chip with your design (and a bunch of others!) and some board to help bring up/testing.

Also, this is "resident", no need to be a student or at uni or anything, you just need a valid Swiss address ...

I know I might be repeating myself here because I mentioned it a few month back but this bear repeating IMHO.

PS: Can I haz boost for reach ?

YES! This is AMAZING! 🎉

Keep pushing against abusive practices, and keep fighting for your privacy rights!

IT WORKS! ✊🔒

Edit: Just to be clear, I still encourage everyone to move to better platforms and delete your Discord accounts (even if there was no age verification at all). Discord isn't a privacy-respectful platform.

But this small victory means we should keep pushing for better privacy practices, everywhere.

This means they are listening. This means you have the power to make things better, for yourself and for others.

Celebrate that. And keep pushing back.

anyone want to help me track down an old DOS game from when i was a puppy?

it was an interactive storybook that was jungle book themed, but i don't think it was specifically the Disney jungle book, and it may have had other storybooks bundled as part of the game.

there was a recurring motif or way to control the game via an artist's palette. the different colors on the palette would do different things; i vividly remember shere khan poking his head into the wolf den, clicking one of the paint colors, and suddenly making him wear clown makeup.

it was pretty definitively DOS; i remember my mom having to boot into it specifically and calling it a hassle LOL. it was not a sidescroller at all, definitely aimed at children.

cc @misty , i feel like if anyone could find it, it'd be you.

I've managed to update the Italian Wikipedia article on femicide with a proper reference to the first time the term appeared in Italian. Credit however goes to my wife who managed to track down a copy of the 1977 book where it first appeared. Interestingly the author learned about the term in English during the "International Tribunal on Crimes against Women" in 1976, an event that made it spread to several other languages.

A photo of an Italian book on gendered violence. The boot is "Le violentate" by Maria Adele Teodori.

Reflecting on her article about How Decentralized Bluesky is, and asking introspectively whether ActivityPub can win big in the wake of ATProto's surging popularity.

Drawing parallels to Lisp vs UNIX.

"The fediverse has a lot of people who care about the ethics of the technology — we need to run with that."
