I fail using this UI at least once a week.

It's the AirPods Control Center volume pane, where I go to put my AirPods Pro into Adaptive mode (which I have configured a hundred times to be part of the long-press selection, but that always gets inexplicably forgotten).

What you're SUPPOSED to do is tap the circle to bring up the modes.

But right below it is the OBVIOUS LOOK OF A DROPDOWN CONTROL, complete with the double-arrow and tint color, but it is NOT ACTUALLY A TAPPABLE CONTROL AARRGGHHH 😡

Apple’s impeccable UI design and attention to detail

In jedem Fall: .

Most of us here are well aware of the impact of AI slop on open source projects, and programming work in general.

As an author, I'll share that I'm also seeing an uptick in garbage marketing pitches. I've gotten them off and on ever since my book got published. But they're coming more often, and there's a new trend where people generate emails that make it sound like they read the book, and just want to share feedback.

WELL DONE! As Edinburgh councillors have unanimously rejected plans for a huge new AI data centre.

Not one councillor on the committee, from any party, voted in favour. In voting to reject it, they cited the project's failure to address the climate emergency or show how its greenhouse gas emissions could be minimised.

This is an important development. The proposed data centre at the former Royal Bank of Scotland headquarters in South Gyle would have used 213 megawatts of power - roughly equivalent to every home in Glasgow and Edinburgh combined. Its estimated annual carbon footprint of over 200,000 tonnes of CO2 is comparable to the total emissions from Edinburgh Airport.

Foxglove helped kick this off. Last October, our research, reported in the i newspaper, first revealed the staggering scale of the data centre's carbon emissions. That 200,000 tonnes figure - and our Edinburgh Airport comparison - were picked up across the Scottish media and became central to the public debate. One councillor in the hearing highlighted that the proposal was equivalent to "more than three times the total emissions of the council's operations."

on today's installment of parts that terrify me:

I don't actually know much about this LED, but it's certainly a very strong, possibly ultra low wavelength UV led. The incredibly clear cover-glass and the fact that the dies are water-cooled give off an eerie vibe.

I’m actually scared of figuring out the output power and wavelength by hooking it up to a lab supply. Anyone who knows what specs this could have? What part no it could be?

A photo of a complex metal casing with a golden window with a circular array of small dies and bond wires. It rests on a grey mat and looks expensive Photo of the back of the case. It rests on a glass slide and the mat. Two outlets that look like luer lock hint at this device consuming a lot of power, it’s a water cooling circuit A closeup of the array of dies. It’s 21 small dies that each have a small array of four by four squares in them. A bunch of golden bond-wires escape to the side where they connect to a golden ring. The golden ring is isolated from the golden backplate by another white ring

It is 222 A.D. You are the transgender Empress Elagabalus, "call me not a man for I am a woman". Transitioning is new and experimental.

It is 1776. You are "Public Universal Friend", a transmasculine nonbinary Quaker. Transitioning is new and experimental.

It is 1906. You are Karl M. Baer, a trans man undergoing sex reassignment. Transitioning is new and experimental.

It is 1930. You are Lili Elbe. Transitioning is new and experimental. (to be fair you did get a uterus transplant.)

It is 1966. You are in Compton's Cafeteria with a bunch of other trans people when the owners call the cops to throw you all out. You riot. Transitioning is new and experimental.

It is 1969. You are Marsha "pay it no mind" Johnson. You are in a mob-run gay bar when the cops attack. You throw a brick. There is a bit of a scuffle. Transitioning is new and experimental.

It is 2026. You are a transgender adult or child listening to the NYT and British Guardian claim this is the first generation anyone has tried transitioning in. Transitioning is new and experimental.

guys i just found out that there is another Barber opera. Some guy named Francesco Morlacchi wrote a new score to the Petrosellini libretto used by Paisiello and he had the extremely terrible luck to premiere his opera literally two months after Rossini's Barber, thus all his hard work was ignored and lost to history

so ofc we must investigate this third Barber opera
