The Adorant figurine

Are these marks the precursor to writing?
A series of notches carved on a piece of mammoth ivory roughly 40,000 years ago could be an early ancestor of cuneiform, one of the oldest-known forms of written language. “These sign sequences go beyond decoration that was aesthetically pleasing to particular individuals,” says linguist Christian Bentz.

The Adorant figurine from Geißenklösterle Cave, in what is now Germany, is approximately 38,000 years old and bears a lion-human figure on one side and multiple sequences of notches and dots on the other. (Landesmuseum Württemberg/Hendrik Zwietasch, CC BY 4.0)

He co-authored a new study of the object and more than 200 other Stone Age artifacts that bear these signs. The study found statistical patterns in the Stone-Age marks that are similar to early proto-cuneform — but quite different to the information-dense writing systems of today.

Allegations of a Chinese nuclear blast may reignite weapons testing

In the afternoon on 22 June 2020, a seismic station in eastern Kazakhstan registered two small earthquakes 12 seconds
apart near China’s Lop Nur nuclear test site. Closely spaced jolts can arise from underground explosions followed by a cavity collapse, or simply from earthquakes. But U.S. officials this month asserted the shaking was from a clandestine nuclear detonation—

an accusation that could sound the starting gun for a new global arms race.

unserious suggestion

People cannot be trusted to use "megabyte" as a word. Too many people use it to refer to 1024 and not to the correct SI meaning of "mega."

This can be solved by introducing "kidi," "medi," "gidi," and so forth meaning "kilo (decimal)," "mega (decimal)" and so forth. These new prefixes are completely synonymous with kilo, mega, giga, and so forth, but have the advantage that sloppy developers from the 80s haven't misused them yet.
