What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

@catsaladCat 🐈🥗 (D.Burch) :paw::paw: I Am the Very Model of a Modern Cyber Specialist

I am the very model of a modern cyber specialist,
My posture is proactive and my mindset synergist,
I leverage blockchain paradigms resilient and immutable,
For threats that are, in practice, mostly quite disputable.

I’m zero-trust by principle, by strategy, by ritual,
Though flat networks persist beneath my slide deck quite habitual;
I champion quantum readiness, cryptography transitionable,
While SSH keys on our servers stay embarrassingly guessable.

I speak of AI governance, of ethics and alignment,
Of digital transformation in a cloud-first re-assignment;
I orchestrate compliance in a framework interoperable,
Yet patching legacy systems is declared economically implausible.

I circulate an SBOM with enthusiasm evangelical,
Though half the stack was compiled by interns quite mechanical;
I threat-model via workshops with sticky notes galactical,
But tracing actual packet loss I find impractical.

I quantify cyber maturity in gradients holographic,
With heatmaps operationally impressive and chromatic;
I benchmark risk velocity in dashboards most aesthetical,
While incident response remains distinctly hypothetical.

In short, in blockchain-quantum-zero-trust evangelistical,
In AI-driven thought leadership aggressively statistical,
In buzzword transformation visionary and fantastical,
I am the very model of a cyber strategist theatrical.

But when the logs erupt at 3 a.m. with evidence electrical,
I forward them to someone slightly more technical.

Who are your partner(s)? I tried figuring it out but I'm bad at following

@cwebberChristine Lemmer-Webber is a partner who has a fedi/bsky presence. I have another partner who ~doesn't go to this school~ isn't active here, and, being a relationship anarchist, I also have some more loosely defined connections and am actively doing other dating!

I know what I would do with unthinkable amounts of money. I don't know how to do it, but I'm pretty sure that I could hire somebody with some tiny fraction of that money who would know how to do it.

So why has no one done the kinds of things I think are obvious to do?

I have to conclude that merely *having* the money corrupts you so deeply that you can't do the right things with it.

Hi @whitequark✧✦Catherine✦✧ I'm trying to use a Glasgow to program an STM32F205RG that has been flashed with a bad firmware.
I was trying to make a cdcacm gadget, and flashed with a libopencm3-based firmware, having selected the HSE clock as 8MHz. Turns out the board has a 26MHz crystal, and now it is not responding to st-info or BMDA, via an ST-Linkv2 probe.
Hoping the Glasgow big gun may have more luck, but it seems that the swd-probe applet doesn't have an option to configure a reset pin?

RE: solarpunk.moe/@vv/116144047825

are you working on anything cool right now?

I am pretty excited about a couple of high energy tracks that I've been working on, and I even have lyrics for one of them, so that's exciting! I'm going to work more on them today. I have also been coding a little tracker that runs in the browser and uses Lisp and that's been so much fun.

"In 2019, Aza Raskin, who claims to have invented the infinite scrolling technique, expressed regret at the invention, saying that he 'did not foresee the consequences' and describing it as 'one of the first products designed to not simply help a user, but to deliberately keep them online for as long as possible'."

RE: solarpunk.moe/@vv/116144047825

What's your current opinion on the touching of computers?
Do you still find joy in it?
I'm honestly quite frustrated with... gestures around and so I'm thinking of quitting.

I still really enjoy programming and I haven't lost excitement in it. I am lucky to be in a situation where I can avoid using or working with the output of LLM coding assistants professionally so I feel somewhat sheltered from the whole LLM craze. It does feel like a creeping supernatural force that is getting closer and closer, though. But yeah in my free time I have had so much fun writing hand-written Lisp code with Spritely's technology, and that has been a joy.

The American bombardment of Iran has been launched without explanation, without Congress, without public support. Above all it has been launched without a coherent strategy for the Iranian people, and without a plan to let them build a legitimate Iranian state.

Iran did interfere in the 2020 + 24 elections but it didn’t do much. Those of us working on the Election Integrity Partnership pointed it out at the time. This same right wing bullshit machine alleged that our work was a “censorship industrial complex” and we were attacked by Jim Jordan, Matt Taibbi and Michael Shellenberger who said there was no such thing as disinformation. The FBI task force that worked on this was disbanded as “censors”. Chris Krebs at CISA was fired and smeared.

Back in 2022, surrounded by colleagues who were infused with "open source scepticism", I wrote "Open Source in Enterprise Environments - Where Are We Now and What Is Our Way Forward?" nxdomain.no/~peter/opensource_ as an explainer.

Hopefully a useful thing for others too, with links therein

Since the original came out, I have made updates here and there, and added references to some newer material.

You could see "EU CRA: It's Later Than You Think, Time to Engineer Up!" nxdomain.no/~peter/eu_cra_its_ as a further development in response to the real world (or at least the EU parts) moving forward.
