We hear "all the text on the internet" and we might think "well, they've sure digitized a lot of classic books, that must be good, right?" but then we realize that all of the books are maybe like 1% of the data. Most of it is like facebook messenger breakup arguments and semi-literate emails.

every chat protocol made after IRC persistently keeps you in your chat rooms, even when you’re not connected to the server at the moment. this is generally considered to be a good thing

however, consider: this removes the peak comedy of someone saying “let me try this out real quick” and getting loudly kicked out of the room by their own OOM killer taking exception to an unchecked memory leak.

so, it;s impossible to say if its bad or not

You try and help. You try and make things a little better in whatever small way you can. You think, “hey, maybe at least there will be some respite now… maybe things can start to get better” and, just as your foolish little brain starts to believe it, the fuckers who fuck everything up for everyone but themselves – and somehow are never held to account for any of it – go and fuck things up even further. It’s fucking depressing. I mean I don’t know how we’re not all just fucking depressed every fucking minute of every fucking day.

Random video but I'm impressed how this video goes through all the problem solving procedure from the start to the end, including all failures, why such decision was made etc etc. youtu.be/d6Pcp944sRI

Also a reminder that while the Iranian regime is undeniably horrible, it is also the result of CIA and MI6 instigating (in 1953) a coup d'état against the government of Iran that had a democratic mandate, over oil:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1953_Ira

Here's the Wikipedia page about the prime minister of that government, Mohammad Mosaddegh:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mohammad

The coup made shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi an authoritarian monarch with US backing. His oppressive regime ended with the 1979 Iranian Revolution.

"I was born in an Iranian prison. My parents were held in their jails. My uncles lie in their mass graves. Nothing you can tell me about the crimes of the Iranian regime that I haven’t lived in blood and bone. That doesn’t mean I want my people bombed, maimed, killed, their homes in ruins. If your vision of liberation comes only through the destruction of innocent lives, then it’s not freedom you’re after.”

Most days I think that, in the long term, the people fighting for a better world will win.

But some days I wake up and wonder if that’s just misguided hope.

Ultimately, it doesn’t change what I do. Because I’ve been in “give up” before and I can’t live like that.

@lcamtuflcamtuf :verified: :verified: :verified: one time i was proud of my fellow gen z was when i heard we are bringing back going to the mall. i think that impulse has a lot of potential in adapting to these kinds of trends because you can go to the mall and talk to someone and be pretty sure theyre not a robot, and that will likely remain true for several years
