lazy web: I got a free chromebook, a 2016 model (specifically an HP Chromebook 11 G5 EE (TPN-Q151)).

I have never touched a chromebook before now, and I'd like to use this thing to play videos out the HDMI port.

Any suggestions for how I should do that? Like, upgrade the OS version as much as it goes and keep it mostly stock? install a linux on it? Some combination?

Ideally I'd like to just be running VLC on it

Israel’s Air Force says it has dropped more than 1,200 munitions on Iran over the past day in its joint attack with the United States.

Among the sites attacked in Iran include an elementary girls’ school in Minab, a city in the Hormozgan province of southern Iran, where at least 148 people have been reported killed and dozens more injured.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said “dozens of innocent children” were murdered in the attack on the school, which would “not go unanswered.”

我其實還蠻喜歡西元2000年以前的作業系統，例如NeXTstep, MacOS, PalmOS, BeOS等。一是工作環境簡單，生產力不變。我現在用Office365還是只會用Word 6.0已經有的功能。二是那個時候的使用者介面與色彩是一門專業，是深思熟慮後的產品。

雖然這些老作業系統還是可以使用模擬器在現在的硬體上執行，但最大的問題是多半不支援SSL/TLS，所以連上網下載軟體都需要一番功夫。目前仍保有這些系統的精髓又能支援現代加密網路的大概就只有Haiku了。

『경제왕 연산군』은 연산군의 몸에 빙의한 경제학 전공자가 되어 역사를 바꾸는 대체역사 소설입니다. 제목이 시사하듯 경제에 관련된 내용이 주가 되어 있습니다.

요약해 보면 조선 왕에 빙의한 한국인의 현대 지식으로 조선이 발전하고 세계의 깡패국가가 된다는 내용입니다만, 다른 작품들과 다르게 경제학적인 지식이 부각됩니다. 영국의 산업혁명의 역사에 필수적이었던 섬유 산업을 중요하게 다룬다거나, 안일한 통화 정책으로 인해 경제적인 착취 구조가 자리잡는 과정, 인플레이션과 디플레이션, 경기 부양과 침체… 기술적인 부분은 대충 넘어가는 듯한 묘사가 가끔 보이기도 하지만, 경제 부분에 대해서는 꽤 진지한 소설입니다.

특기할 만한 점이라면 전형적인 대체역사 소설보다도 좀 더 서술자(작가의 내레이션)가 주인공과 거리를 두고 있다는 점일까요. 현대인인 '경식'은 어떻게 서양이 대항해시대를 거쳐 발전할 수 있었는지 알고 유교를 경멸하며 당시의 조선의 사대부들을 싫어하는 모습을 보여줍니다. 많은 대체역사소설에서 작품의 시점이 빙의한 인물의 시점을 크게 벗어나지 않는 모습을 보이고, 그것을 가능하게 하는 일종의 '초인'으로 주인공을 다루는데, 이 작품의 서술은 "경식은 그런 거 원래 잘 모른다"는 표현을 자주 쓰고 주인공이 어떤 부분에 신경을 잘 쓰지 못한다는 것을 확실히 합니다.

대표적인 부분이 그가 가족에서 어떤 아버지였는지입니다. 제가 읽은 대부분의 대체역사소설에서 주인공은 좋은 아버지이고, 자식들이 주인공의 유산을 큰 문제 없이 계승한다는 점에서, 이 소설에서 태자와 갖는 갈등은 색다르게 느껴졌습니다. 『동로마 황녀가 내 아이를 임신하셨다』에서는 주인공의 둘째 아들이 '신성 로마'하는 이야기가 될 계획이었다고 하다가 방향을 바꾸었다고 하는데, 그런 방향은 아무래도 웹소설에서 쉽게 쓸 수 있는 내용은 아니겠지요. 그런 면에서 이 소설의 가족 문제는 '이 정도는 사람들이 맛있게 먹을 수 있다' 같은 느낌입니다.

주인공이 긍정하고, 독자들이 즐겁게 따라갈 수 있는 작중의 경제 발전 이야기이지만, 작가는 백성 등 여러 인물 시점의 에피소드를 통해 경제 발전과 그로 인해 다가온 사회상의 변화가 실제로 그 시대를 사는 사람들에게 어떻게 여겨졌을지에 대해 서술하는 것을 빼먹지 않았습니다. 급격한 사회 변화를 겪은 대한민국 사람이라 와닿는 지점도 있을 것 같네요.

여러 모로 읽어 볼 만한 소설이라고 생각합니다. 원 역사의 연산군이었던 이융의 인격도 주인공과 분리하기 어렵게 영향을 미쳐 호화롭게 입고 여색을 탐하는 주인공이 되었는데, 우리가 아는 경제 발전을 위해서는 소비를 진작시킬 필요가 있다는 걸 아는 현대인 주인공에 의해, 그리고 산업혁명의 시발점에는 의류산업이 있었다는 사실에 의해 결과적으로 연산군이 기생들에게 스타킹을 포함한 복장을 입혀 아이돌 공연을 시키는 소설이 되기는 했지만요.

It's kind of impressive how widespread is the view among US foreign policy types and media figures that you can indiscriminately bomb another country and they will not only love you for it but immediately reform their entire country to be accommodating to your whims.

Like, it's never once come true but that hasn't stopped them from insisting on it every single time.
