What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

  • Identität: Dein behaupteter Name, genauer gesagt, Dein eindeutiger behaupteter Name.

@b0rkJulia Evans nit: I'm not sure 'nohup' is a builtin? All of bash, zsh and fish report "nohup is /usr/bin/nohup" in response to "type nohup". But perhaps it is in some other shell? That would be easy to believe.

Even more persnickety and perhaps too much detail: 'kill' is a builtin _as well_ as being an external command, because the builtin version can understand job-control specifications like %1 as well as plain pids.

@unattributed exactly.

I practiced myself in avoidance of the term, and found that to be refreshing and lending a different perspective.

"Users" carries an aspect of depersonalization, but also implies an ownership relationship that creeps into the developers thinking, and even where the noble ones say "I serve MY users" it has consequences to the entire dynamics around software dynamics, and how the solution deliverable is able to serve the needs of different stakeholder groups.

Social experience design focusses on needs-based development and starts to consider problem statements first for all identified stakeholders in the solution delivery process.

For fediverse I use on occasion, the residents of the fedi universe.

@unattributed

Note that once you are conditioned to avoid the term "User" after a full career of addictive use of the word in that dev context, you start to notice how weird and awkward it really is.

You don't notice that while still addicted to your daily dose of saying "user" in broad generalization and technical abstraction. Devs think it is practical to use the word, pragmatic. But it is not. It is a technical word, and the use is similar to when a dev says "JSON" for instance. It is depersonalized, and that depersonalization seeps deep into the codebase over time. It is a word that anchors devs in the technosphere and keeps them there.

It occurs to me that there are other voices we should be listening to that aren't European or American in our internet spaces.

So Fediverse who else should we be reading when we worry about Internet Freedom?

About the centralisation dangers and censorship on the internet?

Who are we drowning out?

EDIT: :BoostOK:

Like seriously, if you have a suggestion please reply. I'm enthusiastically asking.

Atomic agency head says no proof of Iran weapons programme

The head of the UN’s nuclear watchdog says inspectors have not found evidence of a coordinated Iranian programme to build nuclear weapons despite Israeli and US claims.

International Atomic Energy Agency said that the agency had not identified “elements of a systematic and structured programme to manufacture nuclear weapons” in Iran.

jmb.mx/blog/2026/03/02/looking

I’m making this post because I don’t what else to do.

I’m looking for James Mast, a son of Moses Mast (my dear friend and mentor who recently passed away). If you are James or you know how to get in touch with him, please contact me (jmb.mx/contact) , as I want to make sure James can attend the memorial service (even if it has to be remote) but also for some other important issues.

FYI, James was last known to be in Cornwall, Ontario (see cbc.ca/news/canada/sixties-sco ) , but I haven’t had any luck tracking him down.
