What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

When making an app do you often build the prototype first and worry about UI design as a second step? In past projects I've had a clear vision for what the app should look like and do. But what I'm working on now I can't put my finger on how it should look. I want it to have a unique look but a simple feature set. And because I haven't found that look yet it's been inhibiting my progress on it... Just me? Or is this relatable?

It's been a handful of days since I turned off my smartphone and I've already noticed some changes. My long dormant keypad typing skills are coming back which is fun. My anxiety about not having a smartphone is starting to fade. I'm really enjoying my single purpose devices (nex-5, xteink4, gbc, Voyager 2). Auto complete typing made me nervous. Having a notification light on my phone is a game changer. We'll see how it goes but I don't think I'm going back.

I find stack overflow security bugs fascinating; and on Linux, compilers still don't protect against stack overflows by default when stack frames are bigger than stack guard pages.

So I went looking around in Android, and thanks to how Android's RPC mechanism allows recursive synchronous callbacks in some cases, I managed to find a way to jump a thread guard page in system_server from shell context and (with very low success rate) get instruction pointer control:

Good News! 🚨👀

I am delighted to finally announce today what I've been working on in the past few weeks:

Privacy Guides' new Activism section! :awesome:
https://privacyguides.org/activism/

The Activism section offers a new way to empower the digital rights community. It will progressively grow with more tools to support the community in its privacy activism effort, both for individuals and organizations 💛

As Privacy Guides' new Activism & Outreach Lead, I will be working hard on developing this section even further in the coming weeks, adding many more tools to support our community.

I hope this can be a helpful resource for anyone who is ready to fight for privacy rights ✊🔒

The ‘Buy Canadian’ consumer movement is more than just talk — and now the numbers prove it esp in coffee, fruit juices, travel and stocks.

“Canadians took almost 10 million or 25 per cent fewer trips to the US last year.

The biggest drop was in trips across the border by land which fell by 8.4 million or 30 per cent.

Trips by air were down 1.2 million or 12 per cent.”

Me: No, it's just heavy metals, c'mon.
Them: And yet you use lead in your pencils!
Me: Wait, what? No, I use graphite in my pencils, what are you...
Them: And you like leaded gasoline!
Me: No, I really don't.
Them: And car batteries! Those have heavy metals like lead!
Me: I wish they didn't, but sure, you got me. I use lead somewhere. I still don't *eat* my car batteries, though.
Them: *increments "heavy metal user" column in OKRs*

定格1.6Vって書いてあるけど1.9Vくらいから始まるんだねえ。定格3Vのデバイスなら3.8Vから。コンデンサとか耐圧5Vくらいからが多かった気もするし問題ないのかもねえ…

uspol, kansas, transphobia

Kansas invalidates license of a trans person who didn't even change their gender marker assignedmedia.org/breaking-new

So who, and when, flagged her as transgender? And in what way does this even apply to the law passed?

They just want to harass trans people.

1. The Supreme Court just handed down its 5th anti-trans decision in less than a year. It could lead to forced outing of trans youth across the country, with 40 cases pending that it may impact. It also forces CA teachers to misgender some trans students. Subscribe to support our journalism.

RE: infosec.exchange/@Em0nM4stodon

This is an amazing resource. I've read various guides and articles in the past, but they've all been separate and disparate. This is a lot of good resources in one central area.

Edit to add: This isn't just a tool list and guide. This goes into detail on building community and guidance for groups as well.

Add it to your knowledge repertoire.

This started as a post, but ended up a little bit too long for that...

In short, I'm looking for a company (or companies) that could be interested in investing in this vision for the social web. Please spread around.

My experience of the :

Year 1 (2023):
It feels a little lonely as 99% of my friends stayed on Big Tech platforms.

Year 2 (2024):
I start a blog - - to explain the fediverse to "normies"... and I make a lot of new (techie) friends.

Year 3 (2025):
My techie friends encourage me to start self-hosting with ... and I do! (GoToSocial, PeerTube, NextCloud...) I LOVE it.

Year 4 (2026):
I plan to buy a Heltec to try out off-grid mesh radio communication 💁‍♀️
