What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

I've been saying for a while that we need something like FediCon in East Asia. A dedicated conference is still a stretch, but I've been thinking about a smaller step:

@COSCUP 2026 (Taipei, Aug 8–9) is accepting proposals for community tracks. It might be worth trying to open a Social Web track there—something in the spirit of the Social Web devroom at FOSDEM.

Nothing is decided yet, but if you're working on , the , or anything in the social web space and might be interested in speaking (or co-organizing), I'd love to hear from you.

Published some notes on the situation at Qwen - they released the Qwen 3.5 family (an outstanding family of open weight models) but now their lead researcher and several others all appear to have resigned within the past 24 hours simonwillison.net/2026/Mar/4/q

@cwebberChristine Lemmer-Webber Their TOS and community guidelines include:

These Terms only apply to social networking that happens on Bluesky. If you’re using another social networking application on the AT Protocol that isn’t Bluesky Social (a “Developer Application”), the terms and conditions of that Developer Application will govern your experience. We are not responsible for the content or practices of Developer Applications.

once again federation is a total afterthought to the bsky team.

(Following thread was prompted by people pointing out that the Bluesky dev team seems heavily into vibe-coding now and originally posted on said vibe-coded Bluesky platform that is now constantly failing.)

Over the past year, every single time one of the apps or services I use suddenly became less reliable and more buggy, I never have to look far for the "Claude is amazing and now writes most of my code" post for the devs involved.

Strange bsky.app/profile/chanda.blacks

Apparently blocking the bluesky moderation account can get you banned because it "interferes with our ability to enforce our terms of service"

But... how could that be true really, they have all the data? I'm confused

Normalize NOT spamming the crap out of Open Source projects with low quality PRs. It's not a good look.

It is not going to help you become a meaningful contributor and if your professor is encouraging you to do it, send them to me.

the MacBook Neo should be a giant wake up call for Microsoft to improve Windows 11. Apple’s MacBooks have always largely been premium devices, but the $599 Neo is firmly in the core part of the Windows OEM market. This is a red alert for Microsoft, Lenovo, Dell, HP, and others

@cwebberChristine Lemmer-Webber Don't worry, I'm sure Steve and his pals will reinvent unions, only badly, any day now. We'll know because they'll tell us in a series of breathless blog posts detailing how nobody's ever thought about something so revolutionary before and it's the Best and Most New Thing Ever.

(I give them a 30% chance to reinvent trains, badly, again, in the same blog post because that seems on brand for them)

@wordshaperDan Sugalski @cwebberChristine Lemmer-Webber It's a completely new concept: Employee Disrupts! You have a small Incubation Team which finds other employees who want to Disrupt, and then when you're ready you Activate the Disrupt, at which point the company is forced to take action or not have employees available to work! Completely new paradigm here. Then, you could have the employees pay a subscription to the Disrupt to fund further work. Watch out for Opportunists, though, who will work even when a Disrupt is happening. Don't cross the Disrupt Streams!!
