What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

if you're depressed about the state of the world right now

or you're too numb to be able to feel anything at all

it means you have a moral compass. hold on to that.

So, some 'residents' of Dubai are desperate to return to Dubai because:

they may not have been in Dubai long enough (if they stay away) to maintain tax residency & continue to benefit from its low/zero tax rates;

to stay in countries (like the UK) will expose them to that county's taxation if they stay too long.

It seems, given the choice between safety & paying more tax, some of the rich are keen to keep their tax low whatever the personal risk....

i really like generative ai in theory but the business model behind all the usable ones plus the overall incentives created by [gestures vaguely at everything] for everyone else to Churn Out Slop really fucks things up. in a perfect world i think they could be fun to play around in

Zlib-rs is now feature-complete! We've released v0.6, the first version with a stable and complete API. The blog post has the details.

Zlib-rs offers an alternative to C/C++ counterparts. It provides on-par (or better!) performance while reducing attack surface through memory safety.

With thanks to our maintainer @folkertdevFolkert de Vries, our contributors and @sovtechfundSovereign Tech Agency.

new workflow unlocked: recording a screencast then asking claude to:
* transcribe it to English subtitles with whisper-cpp
* use ffmpeg to take JPG snapshots of the interesting moments
* file bugs I've been ranting about out loud
surprisingly effective.

A lot of people talking about dumping Proton right now are misunderstanding what actually happened.

Feds were able to coerce the Swiss government to coerce Proton to hand over whatever data they had on an anonymous Stop Cop City email address, that was being investigated for terrorism.

That metadata included credit card details information for the account, which is very difficult to anonymize.

Proton offers cash payments to work around this obvious security flaw.

If you must pay for a Proton account for a radical project, pay with cash (you can mail it) or washed crypto (Monero -> Bitcoin).

All credit card payments are traceable, even to a privacy-focused company.

Your security model should not rely on a business to fight the state on your behalf.

Your email or VPN provider is not going to risk prison time for your $5/mo. It's just not going to happen, at least for anything commercial. Tuta and every other email privacy-focused email company will comply with court orders.

Trying to find the perfect email provider is a fool's errand. It doesn't exist.

You can however anonymize your useage of privacy friendly services like Proton, Tuta, or Mailbox by not entering your credit card number, phone number, name, personal email, or IP to that account.

Not that we would ever get all developers to agree, but i do wish there was a standard `.config/` or `.tools/` directory in most repos for all the assorted tools . . . instead of every tool having a `.<toolname>` or `.<tooldir>`

(While I'm being naive, I also wish projects followed specifications.freedesktop.org instead of thinking they're important enough to have their own `~/.<project>` config directory 🙃 )

KI-gestützte Videoüberwachung in
