What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

Toronto Real Estate agents are going through some emotional damage right now. A lot of them never worked in a market where you had to do any effort to convince people to buy.

Until about a year ago the job was basically listing a derelict garage as “boutique cozy space for a small family in up and coming neighbourhood” for 1M and wait for the bidding war.

Now prices have been going down and listings sit on the market for months then expire.

Still, totally delulu realtors will try to convince buyers that a moldy basement is worth 1M and a great investment. Or that a house next to a sketchy used car lot is totally worth 2M.

Not happening, dude. People don’t have that much money.

Hello all 🙂

This saturday, I have tried a new interesting tool developed by @mapacheMaho 🦝🍻 : FediProfile or Link-in-Bio designed for the Fediverse. It alows you to gather, on one page, your web presence and activities. As an example : hub.vocalcat.com/culturediff

To try it by yourself, have a look at this : hub.vocalcat.com/ ... and get in touch with the creator of this very useful tool, Maho (a very nice person) : @mapacheMaho 🦝🍻

Every day I’m more convinced that the Fediverse’s slow mainstream adoption isn’t really about usability.

People say it’s because it’s hard to join, the terms are confusing, or the apps aren’t polished enough. Maybe a little. But honestly… look at the platforms people already use.

Finding anything on LinkedIn is painful.
Trying to locate the original video on TikTok is a scavenger hunt.
Facebook is still full of weird bugs and odd UI choices.
Instagram hides posts behind algorithms.
Twitter/X constantly changes the rules of engagement.

None of these platforms are exactly “easy.”

People stay because their friends are there. Because the big creators are there. Because that’s where the conversation already lives.

And, if we’re honest, because these platforms are engineered around a very effective reward loop: notifications, likes, infinite scroll. A dopamine machine. You learn the confusing terms and awkward interfaces because there’s a constant reward for doing so.

So yes, making the Fediverse easier to join absolutely helps.

But what would help even more is something simpler:
more mainstream, recognizable, official accounts showing up here.

That’s how networks grow.
People follow people not platforms.

Is this the case because the sites were built from the ground-up to be poor, or was it a result of enshittification after-the-fact?

The assumption still holds true that sites become popular because they serve a need... they do something well enough that users go to it for lack of a better option.

I think the limiting factor toward mainstream adoption is not merely that ActivityPub implementations are better than alternatives, but they are not 10x better than alternatives. Usability fixes are one aspect, we need to keep outpacing the competition.

Today was my actual first bike commute of the year in sandals, after January 9th turned out to not be a bike commute day at all. I can't claim any special hardiness virtues for it, since Toronto is (briefly) up to 10C or so. Will I still bike in sandals on Thursday, when the forecast high is 1C? Who knows (not even me), but maybe.
