한국에서 학부과정을 다니는 동안 큰 불만은 없었다. 하지만 학과에 여성 전임교수가 한 명도 없다는 건 놀랍고도 실망스러웠다. 교수 자리가 극히 적다는 건 알지만 다섯 명의 전임교수 중 여성이 한 명도 없다는 건 이해하기 어려웠다. 대학 내에서도 진보적이기를 자처하는 학과였다. 국가에 의한 폭력, 노동, 인권 등 다양한 사회적 문제를 다루는 커리큘럼이 있었지만 여성주의는 다뤄지지 않았다. 여학생이 더 많은 학과였는데도 그랬다. 대학 내에는 총여학생회가 없었고 여성주의 동아리, 소모임도 없었다. 그럼에도 다들 서로가 진보적이라고 믿었고 남녀평등의 가치를 추구한다고 믿었다. 나도 그렇다고 착각했다. "저는 페미니스트는 아니지만"이라고 말을 시작하던 때였다. 학내에 여성주의와 젠더 감수성이 부재하여 생기는 일들이 계속해서 터졌다. 그러나 어떻게 이 사건을 읽어내고 해결해야 하는지 알 수 없었다. 구성원들은 대개 참거나 묵인했다.
