- I know: that "bass" can mean "low in tone", "a string instrument with lower sound than a guitar", "a type of fish"
- I don't know: how any of those are pronounced. Like "ass"? Like "ace"?

Mass surveillance and censorship are escalating in many countries right now. There is a global attack on secure encrypted communication. Often, authorities, politicians, and tech companies work together to push for new laws. One example: when Ashton Kutcher (yes, the actor), through his tech company Thorn, tried to introduce total surveillance of all EU citizens through undemocratic and corrupt methods.

First, Ashton Kutcher convinced the EU Commission that they could scan everything on an EU citizen’s phone or computer (messages, photos, emails, phone calls, all of it) for child sexual abuse material without, at the same time, looking at the content of other types of communication.

And then?

Check out this new online storefront for Canadian independent booksellers!

booksellers.ca

The Quebec Cooperative of Independent Bookstores, who have been selling (mostly French-language, but also English) books online for 15 years through leslibraires.ca, have launched a new initiative for independent bookstores across Canada.

There are currently 150 booksellers participating, with 25 English-language stores having now added themselves to the ranks.

I'm tickled pink by this expansion. I always check Les Libraires first when I'm looking to buy a book, in English or French. I even check if I'm looking for something in Spanish, just on the off chance they might have it in stock.

Since the coop's members have historically been mostly French-language sellers, Les Libraires is hit or miss for English titles. So, I'm really looking forward to seeing how this new site develops.

Give them a visit and buy a book to support small, local businesses across the country!

If there's an independent bookshop in your area who might benefit from participating, let them know about the project, too!

Oh no, again? Who could have seen it coming?!

Narrator: anyone could have seen it coming.

Thank you to the 200+ attendees who stopped by Booth #112 to connect, share stories, and talk about what you're building with FreeBSD or how you got started with FreeBSD.

The energy this year was a testament to the strength of the open-source community, from longtime contributors to those discovering FreeBSD for the first time.

If you're just getting started with FreeBSD, here’s a clear place to begin:

See you at the next one.

"AI can make mistakes, always check the results"

I fucking loathe this phrase and everything that goes into it. It's not advice. It's a threat.

You probably read it as "AI is _capable_ of making mistakes; you _should_ check the results".

What it actually says is "AI is _permitted_ to make mistakes; _you are liable_ for the results, whether you check them or not".

Except "you" is generally not even the person building, installing, or even using the AI. It's the person the AI is used on:

I really don't know what development on my own apps looks like, going forward. It's like going back to being Clark Kent when you're moonlighting as Superman. I can't imagine working on my existing apps like I have been with my Codex-built projects, and I'm not sure how to bridge the two ways of working. It's beginning to become difficult to imagine writing code by hand again, and it's only been a month 😐

I need volunteers for a test. I’m hosting page on my experimental micropython esp32s3 node. Could you connect with nomadnet capable browser (MeshChat would do fine) with a tcp interface to rn.varnatransport.com:4243 and see if you can load the page? On the page there’s a link with mp3 - easter egg message (2kb) 😁 The page is hosted on the esp32s3 itself (below). I’ll leave the node online for few hours to see if it’s stable with more than one link (me).
