What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

It's kind of nuts how polarized people are on this. I've been following this technology since 2015 (I, as an artist, taught myself Linux so I could run my own style transfer neural networks locally) and it feels a little disorienting the kerfuffle that stirs.

Adding to my Snowflea aka Springtail photos from yesterday: if you look closely you can see a few of them in mid air above the snow ridge. They use a spring-loaded lever on their bodies to catapult them into the air to a height of about 100 times their body length (1mm).
Also, they have an antifreeze protein in their body, thus can be active in the snow.
Fascinating tiny creatures.

Many tiny black spots in the snow, a few can be seen jumped up in the air.

Mastodon has a new human-over-AI contribution policy.

tl;dr:

- The human contributor is the sole party responsible for the contribution.

- If AI was used to generate a significant portion of your contribution (i.e. beyond simple autocomplete), we require you to disclose it in the Pull Request description.

- If you cannot guarantee the provenance and legal safety of the AI-generated code, do not submit it.

- Cases of repeated violations of these ... guidelines could result in a ban from our repositories.

I use Claude and Thaura for search in my daily life.

I use Claude as a rubber duck for coding. On occasion, I'll let CoPilot or Claude add a few lines of code directly. I don't "vibe code".

I enjoy both uses. I don't feel guilty about either.

1. You have a Mac laptop with an outboard Bluetooth keyboard. It’s asleep.
2. You wake up the Mac by hitting the Touch ID on the laptop keyboard.
3. The Mac is annoyingly slow at starting to respond to keystrokes on the outboard. Several seconds, sometimes.

How to fix:

1. Hit any key on the BT keyboard. The Mac will start waking up.
2. Now hit the TouchID to get signed in.
3. Hey presto, the Mac is already listening to the BT.

Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

Penpot have announced their ambassador program and I’m excited and honoured to be part of the first cohort of ambassadors alongside some fantastic and inspiring folks. penpot.app/ambassador-program

Check out the announcement: community.penpot.app/t/penpot-

I’ll be building community where I'm based here in the UK but also wherever my connections to open source software and design take me and my work.

I’ve long been a supporter of Penpot and design needs reliable and dedicated tools and teams that support the growing need for design in open source software and transparent and open source design as a practice.

I can’t wait to get working on our collaborative library and share the liberating and collaborative nature of open source design facilitated via Penpot! 💖✏️

Come and join all the ambassadors Penpot Community Hours, 20th March at 3PM UTC.
Sign up here: app.formbricks.com/s/ko5b815vs

And of course, check out penpot here penpot.app/

A graphic using Penpot.app's dark blue gradient background with hot pink and white graphics of a megaphone speaker and a ribbon with the name 'Eriol Fox' with anime sparkles in pink and white. At the top there is a heart and pencil logo and the title 'penpot Ambassador'. The photo is of Eriol who is a slim, femme presenting person with light skin ton, pink and black glasses, pale pink hair, large hoop earrings and is holding a microphone while adjusting their glasses and smiling at the camera.

Jeffries: "We're in the middle of an affordability crisis. I know Donald Trump denies it exists. In fact, he thinks the most important thing Republicans should focus on right now is voter suppression legislation. That's extraordinary."

Mass surveillance and censorship are escalating in many countries right now. There is a global attack on secure encrypted communication. Often, authorities, politicians, and tech companies work together to push for new laws. One example: when Ashton Kutcher (yes, the actor), through his tech company Thorn, tried to introduce total surveillance of all EU citizens through undemocratic and corrupt methods.

As a product person, some of the most important feedback you can get is why someone bounced on first use. It's also some of the hardest to get and social media remains the best way to get it. Product people MUST aggressively pay attention. E.g. sorry for the link out to X but its where it just happened: x.com/mitchellh/status/2031452

There's a lot of complainers and noise and you just have to learn to not take that personally. The people who have worked closely with me know that what people say on the internet REALLY doesn't bother me.

Instead, I'm always just digging for the nugget of truth in there, the objectively useful piece of data hiding behind the childish emotional temper tantrums online people throw (just so I don't insult anyone here, the quoted tweet here was not that, it was direct and to the point).

If you get your feelings hurt by people on the internet, you're going to miss out on good feedback for genuine improvement.

This is also why I have an account on all social media platforms even if I don't use them much. I mostly ignore the noise, the rage addiction, etc. I'm trying to dig out signal in the noise, and it’s there.

I created a Google account with G Suite in like 2010, on Mar 12, 2013, my account was transitions to G Suite Free Plan. When G Suite became Google Workspace, Google forced me on to Google Workspace Business Starter on Apr 13, 2022. Anyone know a lawyer who can help?

Someone asked me (rhetorically) why I post here. Also: do I want followers?

Of course it's more fun with more people. But I don't post in a way that aims to increase follower numbers:

* I post in two languages (& boost in more).
* I generally boost too much.
* I do not focus on one topic (science, politics, food, random photos, outreach, insiders clearly for astro/research colleagues, train complains, books, museum visits, etc.)

For me, it's about the random encounters. 1/3
