What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

A @djangonautDjangonaut Space cohort is focusing on django-simple-deploy from now through the end of April. It's so nice to have a small, focused group of people to work with and move this project forward!

This has put renewed focus on the dsd-vps plugin. I tabled that last fall, because there are so many questions to sort through when automating a VPS deployment process. The 0.1.1 release (very preliminarily) supports this workflow now:

$ uv pip install dsd-vps
# Add django_simple_deploy to INSTALLED_APPS.
$ python manage.py deploy --platform digital_ocean --automate-all --ssh-key </path/to/public/key>

The JSON-LD Working Group published today a First Public Working Draft of YAML-LD 1.0. [JSON-LD11] is a JSON-based format to serialize Linked Data. In recent years, [YAML] has emerged as a more concise format to represent information that had previously been serialized as [JSON], including API specifications, data schemas, and Linked Data.

I have recently created and launched a new platform called Inkwell. It's designed to integrate with ActivityPub, using open-source code available on my GitHub. There is a lot of work to do, but I'm excited, as I loved online journaling as a kid. Now, having a space I can create as my own (with community feedback) is a dream come true. Here's hoping to others join us on Inkwell and become Pen Pals!

So I turn over all this personal health data to Microsoft AI so it can give me dubious personalized healthcare advice that I can then fax to my doctor to find out if it will kill me?

"The company on Thursday unveiled Copilot Health, a feature within the Copilot app that lets the chatbot dispense personalized healthcare advice informed by the userโ€™s disease history, test results, medications, doctorsโ€™ visit notes and biometric data as recorded by wearable devices."

RE: w3c.social/@w3c/11621607036256

FWIW, I have been storing Linked Data (including ActivityPub) in an INI like format โ€” because I find INI-like formats more human-friendly (to both read and write) than JSON.

YAML is probably better than JSON, too, in that respects. But I think INI-like formats are better than YAML.

I'll be curious to find out if the MacBook Neo, with its A18 Pro chip and only 8 GB of RAM, feels too slow when compiling Rust. I like Rust a lot, but it's infamous for long compile times, especially for release builds with link-time optimization.

I've been thinking about adding full search support for OpenStreetMap. According to the Nominatim documentation, it says

A minimum of 2GB of RAM is required or installation will fail. For a full planet import 128GB of RAM or more are strongly recommended. Do not report out of memory problems if you have less than 64GB RAM. For a full planet install you will need at least 1TB of hard disk space. Take into account that the OSM database is growing fast. Fast disks are essential. Using NVME disks is recommended. Even on a well configured machine the import of a full planet takes around 2.5 days. When using traditional SSDs, 4-5 days are more realistic.

https://nominatim.org/release-docs/latest/admin/Installation/#prerequisites

Honestly, that kind of scale just makes me want to try it

I landed some performance improvements for the Swift type checker recently, and I'm currently finishing up the next set of changes which I hope to merge soon.

There are two main improvements. The first is a new "disjunction pruning" optimization to help skip impossible overload choices, and the second set of improvements concern implicit conversions and the constraints they generate.

Swift's approach to type inference proceeds in two phases. In the first phrase, we walk the expression, and generate type variables for each sub-expression, relating those type variables with constraints. In the second phase, we try to find an assignment of concrete types to type variables that simultaneously satisfies all constraints. When an expression involves references to overloaded names, the type checker collects the types of all overloads in each set, and forms a disjunction. A disjunction is just a list of possible choices for the type that this expression will receive.

After we generate constraints, we start trying to solve each constraint in turn. Eventually, we will run out of constraints to solve that are not disjunctions. We select one of the remaining disjunctions and remove it from the list. As part of selecting the disjunction, we also "favor" some of the overload choices. We try the favored choices first, and only attempt remaining choices if none of the favored choices succeeded. When we select an overload choice, some more constraints get generated and simplified; if one of those constraints fails, our current combination of choices is not viable, and we backtrack. Otherwise, we're once again presented with the problem of selecting the next disjunction, and this continues until we've chosen an overload choice from each disjunction.
