So ways in which masto is my favorite...

1. I woke up to over 500 notifications and just said FUCK audibly. This is going to be a whole thing. But no, it was just a wide ranging and interesting discussion about America's class and social systems, and how they terribly disadvantage most Americans.

2. I can edit my posts to clean up my terrible spelling

@swelljoeJoe Cooper 🇺🇦 also, not for nothing but giving developers slow computers doesn't really help them focus on optimization that much because developers spend more than half their time running (also slow) dev tools that they have no control over. giving them a computer that runs their tools slowly so that it will *also* run their output slowly in the hopes that they'll get *so* upset that they will torch their employment by yelling at their management is not a recipe for success

The Amstrad CPC6128 edition of New York Warriors was released with both disk sides containing the first side, losing a whole side of levels! Lost for 36 years, author Fred Williams has kindly allowed Games That Weren't to release the lost full version:

It is thanks to Kevin Edwards that the game was preserved, after Fred sent his 3" disks to Kevin.

FEP-34ec: Notification Collection Endpoint

naturzukunft @naturzukunft@socialhub.activitypub.rocks

This FEP defines a standardized notification collection for ActivityPub actors. A new notifications property under endpoints (ActivityPub §5.7) provides an OrderedCollection containing Notification objects that inform the actor about relevant activities.

Unlike the inbox, which receives raw activities, the notification collection holds server-generated notification objects. Notifications only exist within the collection — read notifications are removed. Batch removal is supported via FEP-db70 (RemoveAll) with optional FEP-34c1 filtering.

I grabbed a copy of Goodnight Punpun at Bookman's down in Tucson. I had no idea what I was getting into. Full of tragedy, awkwardness and abuse it still manages to be a gripping read and even a little uplifting. I haven't been this captivated since I read 20th Century Boys. I don't know if I can really recommend Punpun though, it's challenging stuff.

The cover of Goodnight Punpun by Inio Asano. Printed in yellow, blue and white it features a strange bird ghost child sitting on the seat of a public bus.

Tech companies defeat bill as AI drains local water supplies theolympus.net/13531/

Washington House Bill 2515, which aimed to make data centers pay for their own grid infrastructure and use clean energy, failed in March 2026. Despite passing the House, the bill was defeated in the Senate following heavy lobbying from tech giants like Microsoft and Amazon. They will keep using clean water and electricity but bill needs to be paid by locals.

If you need to create a FAT32 formatted USB thumb drive, find out its devicename
running dmesg(8) after inserting it. Then create an MBR schema, a single slice and
format it:

# gpart create -s MBR ${devicename}
# gpart add -t fat32 ${devicename}
# newfs_msdos -F 32 -L thumbdrive ${devicename}s1

"'Homosexuality should be accepted by society.'

The biggest gender gap on that question:

It's among men and women born in the early 2000s.

65% of young men agree
82% of young women agree.

A nearly 17 pt divide.

It's just 7 points among people born in the 1990s."

~ Ryan Burge

Now let's do how those younger males voted — in comparison to young women — in 2024.

When looked at the right way, init systems like systemd, launchd, etc are build systems; instead of building a piece of software, they build a working environment. This is more than just a vague metaphor: most reasonable init systems will have a way of expressing dependencies, expected outputs, etc.

What *is* legitimately different is that init systems keep running after the artifact is built, and have rules that dynamically fire; EG: a rule that fires when network configurations change, a rule that fires every hour, etc. In a sense, this means that init systems are build systems that are always in watch mode, and support dynamic rules.

It would be interesting to transfer these rules across our analogy, and experiment with a build-style system that supports dynamic watch rules. Most fancy build systems already support an ad-hoc form of this via hot-reloading, but a principled version seems very useful!
