What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

@liwLars Wirzenius There were things that pulled stuff away from programmers though. Much of it at the time was hidden by the growth in demand.
Excel, BASIC, some expert systems, Hypercard, DBase and friends all enabled an army of not-really-programmer people to get real work done without having to become programming experts of any kind.

None of them hallucinated or ate entire data centres for lunch. Their output was predictable if slow and they kept working over upgrades in general.

Any journalists want to write an article about all the environmental costs of the more than 10,000 Starlinks that are now in orbit? All I'm seeing are breathless articles mindlessly worshiping That Awful Billionaire for crossing the 10,000 satellite mark.

Every single one of those will come down in an uncontrolled reentry. That's a lot of metal in the atmosphere, and a lot of dice-rolling to see if any more pieces will make it to the ground.

SpaceX is truly awful.

Hi . We need to talk about something.

While talking to a colleague about how I recently learned most people have never sat on a crow it came up that she has never been sat on by a cat. Like, not even once during childhood.

Another colleague admitted they also have never been sat on by a cat.

My hypothesis is that most people have at one point in their life sat on by a cat.

🐈🐈‍⬛🐱

Have you ever been sat on by a cat?

Please boost for scientific accuracy.

<personal-rant>

Publishing projects to PyPI without a source distribution, links to a source codebase, or other indications of "what might be in this binary package"? is definitely a smell to me when I'm evaluating which projects I want to rely upon.

So many projects advertise an License like MIT and Apache-2.0 and do not supply any sources in the "obvious" spots.

We released SQLiteUndo, built on @pointfreecoPoint-Free's incredible SQLiteData.

Consistent undo is a huge part of a great Mac experience, and since @aphera leans heavily on SQLite for storage and observation we wanted undo to *just work*

If you're going to PyConUS and planning out your talk schedule, I scraped the website talks and saved the title, times, room, speaker, and description into a CSV. You can find it in this Github gist (gist.github.com/ptmcg/d851232d), which uses littletable and rich packages to provide a simple REPL to search the talks by keyword, title, and speaker.

Output of a search prompt showing the results from searching for the term "3.15" (returning 3 talks) and "eckel" (returning 1 talk)
